Free format text (please update) Radio galaxies are an important class of extragalactic objects: they represent one of the most energetic astrophysical phenomena; they may be used as probes of their environments; and they are unique probes of the early Universe. The size scales and brightness levels which HST can measure are ideally suited to the study of optical emission associated with the host galaxies of radio sources and anomalies such as jets and tidal debris. In Cycle 4 we carried out a red continuum snapshot survey of the 3CR catalog to ask: What are the host galaxy morphologies --- are there differences between FR-I and FR-II sources, nuclear cusps, tidal tails? How common are optical jets? Do optical continuum and radio structures align? How common are dust- discs; what is their orientation and morphology? In Cycle 5 we are observing emission line 3C sources to map circumnuclear ionized gas, identify where jets and gas interact, and find gas disks and filaments. Here we propose to add blue continuum observations to provide unique high spatial resolution information on the color distribution within galaxies, the reddening due to dust, the spectral indices of optical synchrotron jets and the colors of active nuclei and tidal tails. We will measure colors of star clusters at low redshift and see how the alignment effect ``turns on'' with redshift at a second, bluer wavelength. The resulting database on one of the most studied samples ever will be a major resource for the astronomical community and we will waive proprietary rights to these data. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: sectionObservations The sample definition is the revised 3C as defined by Bennet (1962a,b), 298 sources. All sources have been identified optically, and redshifts measured for all but two, Spinrad et al. (1985), Djorgovski et al. (1988). The completeness properties are discussed by Laing, Riley and Longair (1983). The sample has a maximum redshift of 2.54, the median redshift of the radio galaxies is 0.27, and the 3CR spans nearly five orders of magnitude in radio luminosity (10^41 - 10^46 ergs/sec). Of these, 17 have existing HST F555W observations and we exclude them to leave a sample of 281 objects for F555W observations. Ten F702W targets were not observed in proposal 5476, and an additional four excluded for conflicts appear never to have been observed. Re -inserting these 14 targets for F702W observations leaves a final total sample of 295 objects. For exposure times using the F555W filter of 10 minutes, with fine-lock guide star acquisition and CR-SPLIT, we calculate a 5Sigma limiting magnitude of V ~ 26.0, using the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator on the STScI WWW pages. For isophotal measurements at ~ 3Sigma per 0.1* 0.1 arcsec, we would go to levels of Mu_V ~ 22 --- 23 mag.arcsec^-2, typically somewhat fainter than the surface brightness at the half-light radius of an elliptical galaxy. This ensures adequate S/N on extended emission, see also Fig. 1, and allows point source detection to a 5Sigma limit of V ~ 26. Even against a galaxy background, with Mu_V ~ 22, the S/N for a V=26 source is ~ 3. sectionPersonnel The scientific expertise of the team we have assembled covers essentially all aspects of the problems identified above, and the members of the team have a proven record in these and related fields, and of working with HST imaging data. Some members of our team had previously been heavily involved in the determination and analysis of the optical properties of the 3CR survey specifically, and are intimately familiar with its content, while both they and the others offer expertise in the physics of radio sources in general and in the optical properties of radio galaxies, and related objects such as powerful IRAS galaxies. This experience will be important in drawing together rapidly the disparate databases involved in the statistical comparisons we wish to make. The applicants have strong technical expertize in the use of HST for imaging work. The PI has worked as Instrument Scientist at STScI for each of the FOC, WF/PC and WFPC2. Biretta is WFPC2 Instrument Scientist, Baum is STIS Instrument Scientist. De Koff is using the Cycle 4 data for her Ph.D. thesis at Leiden, supervised by Miley. sectionProprietary Rights Above, we have highlighted a number of specific problems which we intend to investigate with these data.
