The first part is a COSTAR DOB move to adjust the COSTAR focus position for the FOC to the value that will ensure that the FOC focus is within +/- 1.5-2 microns over the next three months. The second part consists of images of a spectrophotometric standard star in the f/96 relay to verify whether the DOB move executed was correct. Data will be taken 4 times during the cycle. This version has visits 5 and 7 removed, and the timing for visits 6 and 8 is changed to unlink it from visit 1. Questions ! Free format text (clear and concise) Observing_Description: A mode I target acquisition will be used to position the standard star in the center of the F/96 256X256 aperture. A series of 3 observations will then be performed using different FOC filters. The F278M filter will be used to measure the pseudo-strehl ratio, while the two F486N images will be used for Phase Retrieval. A set of internal flatfield images will be taken during occultation to monitor the geometric stability. Real_Time_Justification: The COSTAR DOB is moved by real-time commands. This is because we do not know what movement of the DOB will be required. The actual DOB movement requested will be delivered at least 1 week before the COSTAR DOB move is scheduled, based on analysis of FOC images taken in the preceeding months. An INT ACQ is required in order to acquire the star in the smallest format. This format is necessary in order to obtain the highest S/N observations in the shortest time. Calibration_Justification: The COSTAR-corrected FOC is very sensitive to small focus errors. For example, a 5 micron defocus can change the pseudo-strehl ratio to about one-third of its optimally-focussed value, with an obvious negative effect on science image quality. The OTA is focussed every 6 months to keep the WFPC2 in focus, but at the current desorption rate this only maintains the focus to +/- 2.5 microns. With orbital variations of +/- 2 microns common, the resultant defocus could ruin some FOC data. We propose to change the COSTAR DOB focus every 3 months to keep the mean focus position correct to about 1.2-1.3 microns. Any more regular changes would be ineffective, since the breathing effect is of this order. Additional_Comments: The COSTAR DOB moves are spaced every 3 months.
