Frisch PI_Institution: University of Chicago Abstract: The bright hot rapidly rotating B3V star ETA-UMa (V=1.86) gives a pristine low column density sample of the warm (7,000 K) interstellar cloud surrounding the solar system. We will use the GHRS in a very high signal-to-noise mode to search for the interstellar CII* fine-structure lines in this direction, and to measure absorption features due to C, N, O, Si, Zn, Fe, and Mg. From these data total column densities, as well as the the electron density, abundance patterns, temperature, kinematics, spatial distribution of neutral versus ionized gas, turbulence, radiation field, and ionization equilibrium state can be inferred. The star eta UMa has been reported to have shown epochs of emission line activity (traced as the filling in of Halpha absorption features), so we request that Visits 1 and 2 be scheduled 6 months apart so that the SiII 1260 Angstroms absorption line can be checked for profile-shape variations. We also request that our proprietary data period be extended to 9 months to allow both sets of data to be included in the publication which results from the proprietary data. Questions Observing_Description: The C II fine-structure lines, and the C I 1657 A line, are expected to be very weak, 0.2-1.2 mA, and to be spread over 2 pixels for the LISM gas. To remove the fixed pattern noise so that the strengths of these weak lines can be measured, we will use the "super FP-split" procedure. For the weakest lines, the FP-split procedure will be repeated at four different carousal positions in order to achieve S/N~1000. The stronger absorption lines will be observed at a minimum S/N~200. FP-split procedures will be executed at several different carousal positions, utilizing STEP-PATT=7. The observations will be accomplished during two visits, with Side 1 data obtained mainly during the first visit, and Side 2 data obtained during the second visit. We ask that the visits be scheduled in this order. The emphasis of these observations is high signal-to-noise data for the expected weak interstellar lines for this direction. Typically, these observations would yield S/N=300-1200 if statistical errors dominate, and by observing many of the lines at multiple carriage settings we hope to reduce fixed pattern noise so that the statistical accuracies are achieved. Real_Time_Justification: We request that Vists 1 and 2 be scheduled about 6 months apart. The target star, ETA-UMa, has previously shown evidence for B-star emission line activity in the optical region of the spectrum. By scheduling these two visits six months apart, we will increase the likelihood of detecting variations in absorption line features due to such emission-star activity. Observations of the Si II 1260 (and also S II 1260 and C I 1657) are scheduled during both visits and are expected to reveal stellar emission activity if present. We also request that the Visit 1 observations be scheduled before the Visit 2 observations for scientific reasons, since the electron density which we will derive from the C II/C II* ratio in Visit I is our highest priority result.
