The CNOC cluster survey contains 2600 galaxies with velocities, covers the redshift range 0.17 < z < 0.55, and (uniquely) samples from the cluster core to the low- density outer regions and into the field. This dataset displays four dramatic effects: 1) evolution of the characteristic magnitude of the luminosity function, 2) an increase with z of the dispersion in color among the luminous red galaxies, 3) a strong radial gradient in galaxy population (the ``morphology-density relation'') and 4) a rapid increase with z of the fraction of blue cluster galaxies (the ``Butcher -Oemler'' effect). Using HST imaging in two colors, we will test specific color/surface-brightness predictions of a disk- fading model, where most of the early-type cluster population is built up of infalling field galaxies over ~ 10 Gyr, with star formation truncated during accretion. These data will also strongly constrain starburst and merging models. An understanding of field/cluster evolution will also address the systematic uncertainty in estimating Omega_degrees from the virial mass of rich clusters. The CNOC survey finds Omega_degrees=0.2+/-0.04, with a systematic uncertainty of ~ 50\% currently attributable galaxy evolution uncertainties. We will use two-color disk/bulge decomposition techniques (already applied successfully to high-redshift galaxies) which provide measurements precise enough to produce decisive tests of our proposed model. Questions Observing_Description: Our goal is to obtain images in B or V and I (to give restframe U and V) from three regions in each cluster 1) R_c< 0.5 Mpc, 2) 0.5 < R_c< 2 Mpc, and 3) R_c > 2 Mpc. We can do this in all of our proposed clusters. The most accurate method of estimating integration times is to model and simulate the data, then try to recover the parameters from that data. We have used real HST data to determine throughput in each filter and to obtain the appropriate point-spread functions. We know the size distributions of galaxies in these clusters from ground-based imaging and from HST observations in other high-z clusters. Simulations discussed above (see Figure XXX) show that precise measurements of morphological parameters can be made from the observations that we propose. We have emphasized above the need for restframe U imaging. The scientific program proposed here cannot be executed without such imaging because we need to measure colors and luminosities of disk and bulge colors separately. This has been shown to be feasible (Schade et al. 1995a) on data of lower signal-to-noise ratio than will be obtained here but the two colors are of prime importance. We will obtain imaging of about 310 galaxies for which we have velocities and 80\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\% of these will be cluster members. The field galaxies are a key part of the analysis. HST imaging that is planned or already observed forms an integral part of this proposal and is a central reason that we can obtain very large scientific return from a moderate-sized observing request. The reason that so much other imaging will be available is that the CNOC survey is based on the X-ray selected EMSS cluster sample and others have chosen targets from this same list. There are no duplicate observations but many of our fields have been or will be observed in filters other than those that we propose and will be available from the archive. Our science is substantially different from most of the proposals where we observe the same fields but in all cases are capable of superior science because of the data available to us from the CNOC survey. noindent Details of supplementary and primary observations: underline MS1358+62: Observations are planned (Proposal ID 5989) for 12 fields in F606W and F814W (roughly 4200 seconds each). This data is ideal for our program but we require additional F450W observations (F606W is restframe B). The pointing pattern used in that proposal has redundancy so that we can cover the full area in 9 pointings. We thus propose 9 pointings of 1 orbit each (this is a CVZ observation) in F450W in exactly the same fields as now planned. In addition, we propose 2 pointings of 2 orbits each much farther out in the cluster where we have velocities. Total request for this cluster is 13 orbits. We will obtain imaging of 140 galaxies with velocities. underline MS0015+16 Observations will be public in Jan 1996 (Proposal ID Dressler) in F555W and F814W. Quality and colors excellent. In addition to this single cluster-core pointing, we propose 3 pointings in 2 filters for outlying regions. Total request 12 orbits. We will image 53 galaxies with velocities. underline MS0451-03: Observations are planned (Proposal ID 5987) for one central field in one color (4 * 2800s). The filter (F702W) corresponds to restframe B which is acceptable for our purposes. We propose to use those observations, and supplement that central field with F555W (2 orbits) and do 2 additional outer fields in F555W and F814W (2 orbits per filter). Total request 10 orbits. We will obtain imaging for 45 galaxies with velocities. underline MS1621+26 No other HST observations are available or planned for this cluster. We propose 5 pointings in F555W and F814W, 2 orbits per filter for a total of 20 orbits. We will image 70 galaxies with velocities. Thus 3 or our 4 clusters have other observations (total of 36 orbits) and we will use all of those data. In addition to the value for our program, our proposed observations will greatly enhance the value of the archival data, particularly for the study of the stellar populations in these clusters.
