Free format text (please update) We propose to observe the core of M3 for 8 orbits spaced over a time of 24 hours with the WFPC2 camera and F336W, F555W, and F814W filters. We intend to study the blue straggler sequence with the resulting high precision color-magnitude and color-color diagrams. We will also seach for variability among the blue stragglers and upper main sequence stars, and search for a binary star sequence to the red of the main sequence. These data, combined with a similar data set to be obtained with the WIYN telescope from the outer regions of the clusters, should answer crucial questions about the unusual blue straggler sequence and the stellar dynamics of M3. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Each of the 8 orbits will contain 2 600s F336W exposures, 2 60s F555W exposures, 2 80s F814W exposures, and one additional exposure in F555W or F814W. Each exposure should avoid saturating the brightest BSs by about a magnitude. There will be a slight dither between each orbit to randomize the location of any given star within the chip. Any main sequence or blue straggler binary which could evolve into contact on its own has a binary period <= 20 hours. Contact binaries among the BSs should have orbits of around 10 hours, and less on the main sequence so this ensures that at least 2 orbital periods can be observed for binaries already in contact. SX Phe stars are only a few hours long. Real_Time_Justification: We plan to carry out a similar study from the ground using the WIYN telescope. This should allow us to obtain a comparable data set for the outer regions of the cluster. However the ground based observations do not have sufficient resolution to study the core regions.
