At the same time, a fleet of space observatories--ROSAT, EUVE, ASCA, and HST itself--are providing unprecedented views of the vacuum-UV and X-ray emissions of stars in our Galactic neighborhood. These seemingly unrelated developments are in fact deeply connected. A central issue of solar-stellar physics is the nature and origin of magnetic activity: the link between the interior dynamics of a late-type star and the violent state of its outermost coronal layers. As solar physicists are unlocking the secrets of the hydromagnetic Dynamo deep inside the Sun, we and others have been documenting the early evolution of the Dynamo and its associated external gas-dynamic activity. In particular, we have obtained HST/FOS spectra of ten young solar-type stars in three nearby open clusters--the Hyades, Pleiades, and Alpha Persei--ranging in age from 50 Myr to 600 Myr. We have supplemented the HST spectroscopy with deep ROSAT pointings, and ground-based studies. Here, we will continue the HST side of our project by obtaining FUV spectra of two Alpha Perseids from our original program (but not yet observed), and high-S/N follow-up measurements of the hyperactive Pleiad H II 314. Questions Observing_Description: Our original proposal was to record diagnostic-quality FUV spectra of solar-type stars in the young galactic clusters: Hyades, Pleiades, and Alpha Persei. We selected five stars from each cluster, which meet a number of strict criteria for membership, very likely are single, and have reddening- corrected colors corresponding to the restricted MK types G2+/-2 (to minimize the influence of surface temperature in the solar-stellar comparison). To date, ten of the original fifteen targets have been observed (with FOS/BL because GHRS Side 1 was unavailable during Cyc 2 & 3). Our Cycle 6 program has two distinct objectives: (1) Obtain Si IV & C IV detections, or firm upper limits, for two of the four remaining targets with spectral types G0--G1. (2) Record representative high-quality GHRS spectra of one of the hyperactive stars (H II 314) observed previously with the FOS. The availability of GHRS Side 1 offers the possibility to revisit several of our original diagnostic goals, which had to be deferred when the program was moved to FOS. Two settings of G140L can cover the full range 1160-1676, with redundant exposure of the 1400 A region (which contains the the key Si IV 1400 A doublet and crucial density diagnostic O IV] 1400 A multiplet). Also observed are the C IV 1549 A doublet, X-ray-activated He II 1640 A, the low-excitation C I 1657 A and O I 1305 A multiplets, and the intermediate- excitation Si III 1206 A resonance line and C III 1175 A multiplet. We FP-SPLIT the two settings, to mitigate the influence of bad pixels; selecting (sub-)exposure times sufficiently short (5-10m) to resolve any flare activity that might occur (as did for the FOS observation of H II 314). The cluster stars are too faint to be acquired directly on Side 1 of the GHRS, but an FOS-assisted acquisition is feasible (ACQ/binary for the two >11-th magnitude Alpha Perseids; bi-directional ACQ/Peak using G270H disperser for the 10-th magnitude Pleiad H II 314).
