These observations will be partially coordinated with the programs of D. Crisp and P. James. We propose an observation of Mars near opposition, one month prior to landing, and during the landed phase of the Pathfinder mission. Our primary goals are to: 1) develop a geologic map to place Pathfinder surface observations in a regional context, 2) provide atmospheric measurements prior to landing to support any last-minute course corrections, and 3) provide atmospheric and surface measurements concurrently with Pathfinder atmospheric and surface measurements to gain better understanding of the atmosphere and its effect on observations of the surface. Questions Observing_Description: All orbits will image the Pathfinder landing site (19.5N, 32.5W). Visit 1 will occur near opposition, coordinated with the James program as detailed in the Real Time Justification. It will use a filter set that partially duplicates the Crisp opposition filter set. This is intended to provide cross-support for that program. The target will be CML 15, to ensure imaging of the landing site as well as the upland drainage region, to place Pathfinder surface observations in a regional context. Visit 2 will occur in early June, one month prior to Pathfinder landing. It will use a filter set that partially duplicates the James opposition filter set. This is intended to provide cross-support for that program. The target is again CML 15, to ensure imaging of the landing site as well as the upland drainage region. The purpose of this observation is two-fold: 1) To provide an atmospheric measurement prior to any last-minute course corrections, and 2) To provide a baseline atmospheric measurement for support of Pathfinder during landed operations. The remaining 4 visits use a filter set designed to highlight both atmospheric and geologic spectral phenomena, and are intended to be concurrent with Pathfinder measurements of the atmosphere and surface. Visit 3 is intended to provide an intermediate measurement between the observations of James in late June and the last 3 measurements of this program. The final 3 visits of this program will be taken during one martian sol, with concurrent measurements of the atmosphere and surface from Pathfinder. These measurements are intended to be scheduled on alternate orbits, to allow Mars to rotate about 47 degrees between measurements. Visit 3 is targeted at CML 6, and visits 4-6 are targeted at CMLs 6, 53, and 100, to provide complete coverage of the Pathfinder landing site as it moves across the disk of Mars. Real_Time_Justification: These observations are time critical. The opposition measurement must occur one sol after the James measurements, to best complement the programs of James and Crisp.
