Hughes CoI_Institution: Institute for Astronomy, University of Edinburgh Contact: Abstract: A clear understanding of the nature of the host galaxies of radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and radio galaxies (RGs) is of central importance in any attempt to unify and relate the 3 main classes of powerful active galaxies. Current AGN folklore holds that RQQs are found in disc systems, whereas radio-loud objects have spheroidal hosts; meanwhile, the unification of RLQs and RGs via orientation requires that their host galaxies be identical. To test these ideas we have constructed 3 carefully matched samples of RQQs, RLQs and RGs and have being pursuing two complementary ground-based programmes: 2-D modelling of deep K -band images to determine the infrared morphologies and luminosities of the hosts, and off-nuclear optical spectroscopy to determine their star-formation histories. Here we propose to use WFPC2 to determine the optical morphologies and luminosities of the hosts, thus providing the crucial link between our spectroscopic and near-infrared data- sets. Existing HST studies of quasar hosts, whilst producing many interesting new results, have yielded surprisingly little hard information on the properties of the hosts themselves. Our proposed imaging study will remedy this situation by undertaking redder, line-free observations of our three matched AGN samples. This will enable us to perform the first rigorous comparison of the optical-IR colours and morphologies of the hosts of the 3 basic types of powerful AGN, and to build a consistent picture of their star-formation histories. Questions Observing_Description: We propose to observe 10 RLQs, 13 RQQs and 10 RGs with the WFPC2 at R-band using the F675W filter. The radio--loud and radio--quiet quasar samples have been carefully constructed so that their distributions in the V-z plane are statistically indistinguishable, and to avoid confusion our classification of a quasar as radio-loud or radio-quiet is based solely on 5 GHz luminosity^ 12. A comparison sample of 10 Radio Galaxies has also been compiled to match as closely as possible the radio--power and redshift distributions of the RLQ sample^ 13. It must be stressed that none of these three AGN samples can be considered to be complete in any sense -- the essential point is that they are statistically matched in terms of the relevant observable parameters and should therefore be directly comparable. In fact, the objects in the current proposal are subsamples of slightly larger (14 objects each) matched samples covering the redshift range 0.1 <= z <= 0.4. The smaller redshift range is a limitation imposed by the intrusion of H_Alpha into the F675W filter at z>= 0.25, but this actually increases the statistical validity of the matched subsamples. The narrow z range will also ensure a roughly constant spatial resolution for all the images and will minimise the impact of differing rates of cosmological evolution for the three types of AGN. At K-band a sensitivity limit of 21 magnitudes/arcsec^2 was sufficient to detect all of the hosts in the infrared^ 12,13 and in order for useful comparisons to be made we would require the R-band HST images to be of comparable depth. This implies sensitivities of 24 magnitudes/arcsec^2 (we assume that the host galaxy R-K colour is ~eq 3 --> 4, consistent with those of low-redshift RGs, and with the red optical- infrared colours predicted by the best-fit models of stellar evolution to the off-nuclear spectra of the hosts). With the WF2 CCD detector this surface brightness level can be detectable at the 3Sigma level in each pixel in a 2000-second exposure, so that one telescope orbit should easily be able to accomodate an object plus overheads (declinations range from -10^degrees to +45^degrees). Due to the length of the exposures we will be using the default CR--SPLIT. We therefore request one orbit per object, or 33 orbits in total. The F606W filter used by Bahcall et al. is broader than F675W and we are unable to use the F702W ``wide R'' filter because of our desire to avoid contamination by emission lines. However, due to the red SEDs of the hosts (V- R > 1), we calculate that, in terms of the detectability of the quasar hosts, the effective depth of our images will be ~ 1 magnitude deeper than that achieved by Bahcall in similar integration times. Real_Time_Justification: There are no special requirements. We have recently completed 2-D modelling of the K-band morphologies of the host galaxies in order to determine whether they can be distinguished in terms of their luminosity profiles ( i.e. exponential or de Vaucouleurs) and/or near infrared luminosity. Our K-band images, obtained with IRCAM on UKIRT, are free from strong emission lines and also maximise the ratio of host galaxy to quasar light, so that the stellar contribution is more dominant. We are currently working to complete our programme to obtain off-- nuclear spectra of all the objects in our three samples with the WHT. Our results have shown that it is now feasible to obtain quasar host galaxy spectra from the ground which are of sufficient quality to constrain spectrophotometric models of the stellar populations. This was made possible by our deep K--band images, which, because they are uncontaminated by emission lines, allow us to identify where best to place the slit to maximise the level of stellar continuum at least 5 arcsec off--nucleus, thereby avoiding scattered light from the quasar. We have also carried out a multi--frequency VLA survey of our RQQ sample (at 1.4, 5 & 8.4 GHz). Radio data already exists in the literature for the objects in our RLQ and RG samples.
