Abstract Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs show a number of intriguing correelations between their X-ray spectra, kinematics in the form of broad-line widths, and Fe II spectrum. Recent ROSAT spectra have shown that these relationships are very pronounced in the the so-called narrow-line Seyfert 1s, Seyfert 1s with particularly narrow permitted lines. NLS1s as a class show very strong Fe II, and very steep soft X-ray spectra. By studying the entire X-ray--UV--optical continuum, combined with UV and optical emission line strengths (in particular the Fe II lines), we will be able to shed light on the nature of these relationships, and on the physical conditions in the BLR. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6766( 7) - 03/18/96 09:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to cover a wide wavelength range in both the optical and UV, concentrating on the UV. The FOS is ideal for this, providing coverage from 1150--6800 Angstrom with the gratings G130H, G190H, G270H, G400H, and G570H. Our target redshifts are z = 0.025--0.031 for three objects, and z = 0.236 for RX J0134-42. We have used IUE fluxes and measured optical--UV continuum slopes to estimate continuum flux levels at all wavelengths, except for RX J0134-42, for which no UV data exist. In this case we extrapolate the optical continuum using Alpha = 1.7, where F_Nu \\propto nu^- Alpha. Using the inverse sensitivity values given in Tables 1 -6 and 1-7 of the FOS Instrument Handbook allows us to calculate count rates per diode at 50 Angstrom intervals in each grating. At the count rates we derive the FOS detector backgrounds are not important. The signal-to-noise, S/N, was then calculated for a typical exposure time. Table 1 gives examples at a more or less typical wavelength in each grating. Note that we tabulate S/N values per diode in the continuum; the S/N in the emission lines will be higher, and continuum regions over which we can average many diodes together will have much higher S/N. For a sample calculation let us consider Mrk 493 at 2000 Angstrom observed with the G190H/RD configuration. The continuum flux is 22.9 * 10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 at 2000 Angstrom, and the G190H/RD inverse sensitivity is 9.85 * 10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 diode count^-1. Dividing the flux by the inverse sensitivity we find 2.32 ct s^-1 diode^-1. In a 40 minute exposure we will get 5600 ct diode^-1, or a continuum S/N = 75 diode^-1. Our orbit-packing strategy will be to use a standard guide star acquisition (8^ m) followed by a standard binary acquisition with FOS/BL (9^ m). Removing the 6^ m overhead this allows ~ 30^ m for the first exposure, which will be the G130H grating. The second orbit will also be with the G130H grating, allowing another 40^ m accounting for guide star reacquisition and FOS overhead. During occultation we will switch to the red side, and the third orbit will be 25^ m in G190H and 9^ m in G570H, accouting again for guide star reacquisition and Two FOS overheads. The fourth orbit will contain a 20^ m G270H exposure and a 14^ m G400H exposure. The estimated S/N using the above observing strategy and flux level estimates are shown for representative wavelengths in the following table.
