From: krs@frisky.jpl.nasa.gov Proposal_Information Title: Imaging of the HH 30 Circumstellar Disk and Jets Proposal_Category: GO Scientific_Category: BINARIES AND STAR FORMATION Cycle: 6 Investigators PI_name: Karl Stapelfeldt PI_Institution: Jet Propulsion Laboratory CoI_Name: Christopher Burrows CoI_Institution: Space Telescope Science Institute CoI_Name: John Krist CoI_Institution: Space Telescope Science Institute CoI_Name: Alan Watson CoI_Institution: UNAM-Morelia Mexico Abstract: Recent Hubble Space Telescope images have revealed HH 30 to be a prototype young stellar object (YSO) system possessing an optically thick circumstellar absorption disk extended perpendicular to highly collimated bipolar jets. The visible disk is 450 AU (3.2") in diameter and shows a resolved flaring profile consistent with accretion disk theory. This system is the first YSO disk ever observed at 14 AU resolution, and the first viewed close enough to edge-on that the vertical structure of the disk is clearly visible. We propose to build upon our initial results with Cycle 6 observations that address the following goals: 1) Further resolve the system by observing with the Planetary Camera, to better constrain the disk flaring profile; 2) measure the polarization structure of the nebulosity for comparison with multiple scattering models; 3) produce a much better map of the nebular colors via deeper imaging at short wavelengths; and 4) define the time history of the jet flow and the outer extent of the disk nebulosity via deep R band imaging. These studies of HH 30 offer a unique opportunity to expand understanding of accretion disk structure, and thereby constrain the disk evolution processes which profoundly affect theories of the origin of the solar system. Questions Observing_Description: Visits 02, 03, and 04 are polarization imaging on the PC. We allow changes in the telescope roll angle to provide us with the needed polarization coverage. Since HH 30 is a variable source, these visits should execute as close together in time as possible. This means an "opposition campaign". Experience with program 5845 is very relevant to this program, as its target and HH 30 are only 90 arcsec apart. 5845 was able to achieve exactly 60 degree roll angle spacings between its three visits and take observations on Nov. 28, Dec. 02, and Dec. 13 1995. We ask that visits 02, 03, and 04 be implemented in exactly the same way in fall 1997. Visit 01 consists of 4 orbits of direct imaging, plus 1 orbit of polarization imaging on the WFs. The latter is insurance against the possibility that HH 30 varies in brightness during the course of visits 02, 03, and 04. ORIENTs and POS TARGs for this visit are very tightly constrained in order that useful information can be obtained on HL Tau and XZ Tau simultaneously with HH 30.
