Abstract In July of 1996 the International AGN Watch will monitor the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 continuously for 30 days using the International Ultraviolet Explorer, the X- ray Timing Explorer and a network of ground-based observatories. The IUE and optical data will be used to determine the structure and kinematics of the broad-line region in this active galactic nucleus through reverberation mapping. The simultaneous optical, IUE and XTE data will probe the connections between the optical, UV and X- ray continua with an unprecedented combination of high temporal resolution and long duration. We propose to obtain a high signal-to-noise snapshot of the UV spectrum from 1150--3300 Angstrom during this intensive monitoring period using the high resolution gratings of the Faint Object Spectrograph. This spectrum will allow us to disentangle the UV continuum more accurately from the broad wings of the emission lines, identify clean continuum windows free of contaminating emission and absorption, and deblend line complexes such as LyAlpha+N V, C IV+He II+O III, Si III+C IIII and Mg II+Fe II. This high resolution spectrum will then serve as a template for deblending and measuring the lower resolution IUE spectra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6747( 5) - 04/30/96 14:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe NGC 7469 using gratings G130H, G190H, and G270H on the blue side of the FOS through the 1.0" aperture. Since we desire high signal-to-noise (S/N) and because NGC 7469 is variable, we will use a precision peak-up target acquisition sequence to center the active nucleus to within 0.04". This will require one orbit plus 17 m of the second orbit to complete. Given the 53 m visibility available for NGC 7469, the remainder of the second orbit and the full third orbit will be used to integrate for 3820 s using grating G130H. On the fourth and final orbit we will observe for 1720 s with grating G190H and for 420 s with grating G270H. Using the mean flux observed in archival IUE spectra, inverse sensitivities from Table 1-6 of Version 6.0 of the FOS Instrument Handbook (June 1995) for the blue detector, and aperture throughputs from Table 1-8, we anticipate S/N ratios per Angstrom in the continuum as tabulated below. We include a dark-count rate of 0.01 cts s^-1 in our calculations. Should NGC 7469 drop as much as a factor of 4 below the lowest observed historical flux level of 3.4e-14 at 1450 A, we will still achieve S/N > 15 per resolution element at all continuum wavelengths longward of redshifted LyAlpha, adequate for our scientific needs. This will minimize any changes in line shapes that might occur between the FOS and IUE observations and ensure that we can reliably deblend the lower resolution IUE data. This proposal is part of an extensive campaign by the International AGN Watch to monitor NGC 7469 continuously with IUE for 30 days, with an additional 180 hours of coverage spanning the whole observing window. During the 30-day continuous monitoring interval (10 Jun - 10 Jul), simultaneous, continuous observations will be carried out using the X-ray Timing Explorer (XTE). Both of these programs are approved and are in the process of being scheduled for the June--July window in 1996. Our network of ground-based observatories is also ready to begin monitoring NGC 7469.
