Abstract This proposal intends to follow the evolution of the R Aqr jet. The same observations will also tell us about the changing structure of the nebula in the symbiotic binary R Aqr. Together with our earlier observations these new observations will provide the data to do proper motion studies of the jet that is one of the most prominent features of Aqr. FOC images will be taken in the UV and visible O III bands for comparison with previous FOC images taken by the PI. They will provide a homogeneous data set which can then serve as observational basis for modeling that system. R Aqr is the nearest symbiotic system, and the only one, where FOC on HST can provide spatial resolution down to the core of the system. This data will provide a 6 year baseline for studying the evolution of the binary system at a spatial resolution unattainable anywhere else for these key spectral regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6732( 7) - 03/18/97 15:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This proposal intends to continue the basic observational strategy that has proved successful over the past 4 years: Image R Aqr in the O III5007 band and UV medium band filters to map the nebula and jet, and complementing direct images with objective prism images to obtain spectra of each feature along the nebula. The UV observations detect the red-giant Mira variable in the core where it is comparable in magnitude to the secondary, thereby allowing easier measurement of all the objects in the core region. The UV medium band filters to be used will be F190M, F232M, F278M, and F372M. These image the nebula in the C III 1909 Angstrom, C II 2326 Angstrom, Mg II 2800 Angstrom, and O II 3728 Angstrom nebular lines, respectively. The F501N filter will be used to image the nebula and jet in the O III 5007 Angstrom line. The F486N filter will also be used to provide a measure of the HBeta line in the nebula for comparison with the other emission lines. This will allow for comparison with models to see if the conditions driving the jet are changing along with the position of the jet. These direct images will be supplemented with near-UV objective prism and far-UV objective prism images. These prism images allow us to extract spectral information for each region along the nebula. This provides us with a way to track the changing conditions in each region as they change in luminosity. Previous experience has proven that high S/N observations can be obtained in all these filters in relatively short 13 minute exposures, with 19 minute exposures being necessary for the prism images and the F190M image. The program is envisioned as follows: Orbit 1: F501N, F372M Orbit 2: F190M, F231M Orbit 3: F278M, PRISM1+F175W Orbit 4: F486N, PRISM2+F275W. Each exposure would include any necessary neutral density filters (from 1 - 4ND) to provide the proper count rate in the normal 512 x 512 imaging format. REFERENCES ---------- Bridle A.H., 1986, Can. Therefore, the only requirement for this proposal would be to observe this target within a couple months of its photometric minimum, which would occur around 20 Nov 1996 (near the middle of Cycle 6).
