Free format text (please update) We propose to use a powerful new geometric method for the determination of galaxy distances, by obtaining high spatial resolution imaging polarization of candidate supernova light echoes. The techniques requires no secondary distance indicators, can work to distances well in excess of the distance of the Virgo cluster, and may be tied to traditional methods through galaxies hosting `standard candle' supernovae and galaxies with Cepheid distances. The measurements could enable an unambiguous resolution of the current bi-modal determination of H_0. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The level of polarization for 90^degrees scattering should be in the range 40\%---100\% depending on the exact nature of the scattering particles, Sparks (1994). Measurement of such levels is straightforward even for relatively faint targets. The very blue nature of echoes, combined with the need for extremely high spatial resolution and robust imaging polarization capability leads to a natural choice of the FOC/COSTAR for these observations. The observations will be exposures with the three polarizing Rochon prisms at position angles oriented 60^degrees from one another, each exposure one orbit in duration. The S/N will then be sufficient to determine the location of polarization maximum for a source of magnitude V ~ 22 extended over a few tenths arcsec, consistent with the fluxes and sizes of our selected targets. The FWHM of the FOC PSF at 3400Angstrom\ is ~ 0.03 arcsec, the diffraction limit of HST, with a pixel size 0.014 arcsec, and so we will be able to resolve the candidate echoes. In addition, we propose to obtain a one orbit WFPC2 pair of observations using F547M continuum and a narrow-band filter to identify the supernova remnant through its OIII emission. This serves two purposes: Firstly, it enables an unambiguous determination of the location of the event on HST scales and with HST resolution. Even ground based astrometry to 0.3 arcsec is not adequate to the task of securing the exact location of the supernova on FOC scales (especially given the limited historical material in most cases even such accuracies are rarely achievable). Secondly, we get information which is interesting in its own right scientifically. The luminosities of line emission in very early supernova remnants will be of value in theoretical understanding of the transition from exploding supernova to `remnant' phase. We have the expertise in our team to exploit this aspect of our observations.
