Free format text (please update) We propose to observe 10 O/B eclipsing binaries in the LMC & SMC with the HST/FOS over 1150-7075Angstrom \ to obtain accurate stellar temperatures. These temperatures, coupled with radii and masses derived from our ground-based spectroscopic and photomet ric studies, will yield the first directly determined Mass-Luminosity relation for stars outside the Galaxy. Moreover, these binaries can serve as standard candles allowing the distances to the LMC & SMC to be measured directly with a precision of 10-15\% per binary. The limitation in precision is chiefly due to uncertainties in the absolute radii of the stars arising from errors in masses derived from the sparsely-covered and noisy ground-based radial velocity curves. Thus, we also propose a p ilot study to secure 1\% precision masses and radii for a selected LMC eclipsing binary. This will be accomplished by obtaining high -quality (+/-4 kms) radial velocities of the two stars around its orbit using medium resolution GHRS spectra. It is e stimated from the error budget of these proposed observations that the distance to the LMC will be determined to (square)uig5\% uncertainty. HV 2274 (B1 IV-III + B1 IV-III; V_max = +14.2; P = 5(d)7 days; e = 0.128) was chosen for the pilot study b ecause it is a relatively bright and uncomplicated binary. It also has the advantage of having a well determined apsidal motion from which the internal structures of these low metal abundance LMC stars can be probed. It is only with HST that these objectives can be fully achieved. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Part 1: FOS Observations of a Sample of Ten Eclipsing Binaries to Determine Reddening and Accurate Temperatures. (1).The first part deals with the determination of accurate stellar temperatures of the target stars from spectrophotometry, obtained with the FOS using the 1" \ science aperture, that covers a broad wavelength range of 1150-7075Angstrom. We have car efully selected a total of 10 targets to undertake this initial study. There are about 25 systems for which ground-based work is being carried out. All of the systems selected have light and radial velocity curves (or will within the year). They are, for the most part, uncomplicated binaries with chiefly O8 to B3 components; most are detached binaries and have estimated masses between 8Msun \ and 25Msun. Four of the targets are members of the SMC, while the remaining 6 stars belong to the LMC. All of these objects have been observed with the low resolution IUE/SWP camera so that their FUV fluxes are known and thus their FOS exposure times can be reliably estimated. We estimate it will take about two contiguous HST orbits per star to acquire, center, and obtain the three FOS spectra. We plan to acquire the targets utilizing the ACQ/BINARY method followed by a 4x4 peak-up into the 0.26" \ (0.3) aperture. This two-stage sequence (Z + E1/Z + F1 for the Red/Blue detectors) will yield the ne cessary 0.12" \ accuracy for the 0.9" (1.0) aperture and result in an overhead of less than 25 minutes. The following gratings and detectors will be used: G160L + Blue Detector ( 1140- 2508Angstrom; Resol. = 6.87Angstrom/diode), G270H + Red Detector (2220-3300Angstrom ; Resol. = 2.10Angstrom/diode) , and the G650L + Red Detector (3540-7075Angstrom; Resol. = 25.1Angstrom/diode). The observing strategy is to acquire the target and peakup on the target during the first orbit and obtain the G160L exposure with the Blue Detector. The exposures for our targets with this grating range from 5-25 min. During the unusable part of the next or bit we will prep the Red Detector (about 40 min) and then recenter the star in the aperture and take the exposures of the same target with the G270H and G650L gratings using the Red Detector. The exposures with these gratings are between 5-20 minutes for our targets per spectral region. With a total of 10 targets, we estimate a total HST time request of 20 orbits to complete this part of the program. The estimated spectrophotometric accuracy of these observations is about 2- 3\% while the S/N is typic ally between 20-50. The spectrophotometric fluxes will be fit with the latest version of the K urucz model atmosphere program (ATLAS-13) in which the metal abundances will be adjusted for the LMC and SMC, respectively. The bolometric corrections will be obtained from ATLAS-13, once the stellar temperatures are determined. The FUV fluxes will also be chec ked against the available IUE fluxes shortward of 1800Angstrom. In simulations that we have carried out with the expected FOS fluxes and estimated accuracies, we expect to be able to determine the mean stellar effective temperatures to (square)uig350K. Curre ntly with the IUE/SWP (1200-1900Angstrom ), the estimated uncertainties in temperatures for these stars is about +/- 1200-1500K. These uncertainties in temperature lead to large uncertainties in the luminosities because of the T^4 dependence. Part 2: GHRS Medium Resolution Study of HV 2271: Eclipsing Binaries as First Class Standard Candles. In part 2 of the program, we will use the GHRS and the G160M grating with the LSA to obtain medium resolution moderate S/N spectra of one of the brighter targets (HV 2274) at several critical orbital phases. This is a pilot study to investigate the feasibilty of using eclipsing binaries as first class standard candles to determine highly accurate (4-7\%) distances to the MCs as well as other nearby galaxies. Eclipsing binaries, long neglected as accurate distance indicators, can rival or even surp ass other less direct methods. We plan a minimum of 8 visits to the target to measure accurate radial velocities from numerous photospheric spectral features that are present in the FUV. (We chose this small number of visits to keep the telescope time request reasonable, but it wou ld be better to have more observations.) We have selected the spectral region between 1330-1365Angstrom \ for this study because it is near the maximum flux distribution of early B-type stars and contains several stellar photospheric features, such as FeII/ III and Si II/III. This region also contains the important, strong C II 1335Angstrom \ photosphere/stellar wind lines and should contain the weak, narrow MWG and LMC C II 1335Angstrom \ ISM lines. The spectral resolution of the GHRS + G160M grating is about 14 kms \ per diode. Wavecals will also be obtained during each visit to the target. The rotational velocities of the stars are expected to be about 80 kms. From these spectra, we will be a ble to determine the radial velocity of the absorption line centroids of the components to an accuracy of 3-4 kms. We may be able to improve this even more by using cross-correlation techniques with brighter template stars of the same spectral class. Also the ISM lines included in the spectra can be used as relative spectral markers to calibrate the radial velocities. Near the quadratures of the orbit, where we wish to take most of the HRS spectra, the velocity separation of the two stars is about 35 0 kms \ so that the individual lines of each star can be easily measured. We have determined that an exposure time of about 25-30 min will yield a HRS spectrum in the 1330 -1365Angstrom \ wavelength region with a S/N of about 20/1 per diode. An IUE/SWPLLG s pectrum of the star was used to make this estimate. Data Reduction and Analysis The FOS observations will be reduced and analyzed using computer routines available through the STScI. We plan to use IDL as well as IRAF-based reductions and calibrations. The GHRS observations will be reduced using CALHRS routines produced by the GHRS Team in IDL and available at GSFC and at Villanova University. The observations will be reduced and analyzed chiefly by the Villanova team lead by Guinan and Bradstreet. Cl ausen, Gimenez and Tobin will continue to obtain CCD photometry and work on light and radial velocity curves analyses. Niemela will continue to collect ground- based spectroscopic observations and will collaborate in making radial velocity measures. The calibrated FOS spectra will be fit with Kurucz model atmosphere fluxes to determine the effective temperatures of the stars. Bradstreet, Guinan, DeWarf, Maloney, and Maurone have acquired experience doing this with the IUE data. For most of the stars the interstellar reddening (from the line of sight through the MWG) is relatively small : E(B-V) = 0(m)08 and E(B-V) = 0(m)04, for the line of sight to the LMC and the SMC, respectively. From preliminary reddening determinations from the SMC and LMC EBs, the reddening excesses are usually E(B- V) <=sssim 0(m)10. Real_Time_Justification: The observations using the FOS should be scheduled such that they do not occur during eclipses which happen fairly infrequently for all of the binaries in this program. The times of eclipses can be easily calculated from ephemerides which we have in hand for every system. The HRS observations of HV 2274 should be spaced out near times of the orbital quadratures, i.e., when the velocity differences between the components are the greatest. The ephemeris for HV 2274 is Min I = HJD 2448099.8180 + 5.726006E. Ground-based CCD BVR light curves and radial velocity curves are in hand or being obtained by our collaborators chiefly at ESO in Chile (Clausen and Gimenez) , in New Zealand at Mt. John Observatory and using the AAT in Australia (Tobin and gradua te students), and in Argentina (Niemela). As pointed our earlier, the light curves are relatively easy to obtain since they require only 1-2 m class telescopes. The radial velocity programs require larger telescopes and the precision of these data and o rbital phase coverage are not satisfactory in most cases. There is no need to coordinate the proposed HST observations with the ongoing ground-base studies. The ephemerides of these eclipsing binaries are very good, which allow us to combine the data.
