Free format text (please update) We propose making Planetary Camera observations of the periodic comet 22P/Kopff which will pass close to the Earth during Cycle 6. At the minimum geocentric distance of 0.56 AU, the Planetary Camera will achieve a spatial resolution (2 pixels) of 38 km allowing light from the nucleus to be clearly distinguished from light due to the surrounding coma. We plan to measure the B, V, R, I magnitudes of the nucleus in order to derive its color, and we plan to study its rotational properties by measuring its projected cross sections as a function of time. We have an approved program to observe the nucleus of comet 22P/Kopff with ISOCAM in the thermal infrared so that we shall derive its albedo and in turn its size with very minimal asumptions by combining HST and ISO observations. We expect to image possible dust and gas structures in the coma ``down to the nucleus'', and to follow their temporal evolution. This should allow us to map the sources of dust and gas on the nucleus. Extending our knowledge and understanding of cometary nuclei, as made uniquely possible by HST and ISO, is essential in the context of preparing for the space exploration of primitive bodies (e.g., the ROSETTA and STARDUST missions). Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The proposed sequence of observations results from a compromise between the scientific requirements of an adequate temporal coverage, and the necessary limited time available on the HST. We request 8 contiguous or near-contiguous orbits for comet 22P/Kopff (the exact scheduling will be worked out and optimized with the STScI staff as done for our observations of comet Borrelly). This will give a time coverage of approximately 12 to 18 hours (depending upon whether orbits are contiguous or next to contiguous), well adapted to the presently observed mean value of 10 hours for the rotation period of short-period comets. All 8 orbits are filled with an identical sequence of broad-band imaging through the Landolt B, V, R, I filters. The exposure times are 100 sec for the B filter and between 14 to 20 sec for the three other filters. Two R images will be dithered using the simplest dithering procedure of a dual-frame with a five and a half pixel offset in both line and column directions between the two exposures (Hook 1995 ST-ECF Newsletter 23, 31). Our aim is to test this technique of super resolution which shows great promise to the particular case of cometary nuclei. Each visitconsists of one orbit with the following exposure sequence in each orbit: F675W, two 16 sec images F675W, a dithered pair of 16 sec images F439W, three 160 sec images F555W, three 14 sec images F814W, two 20 sec images The above sequence will be used a total of 8 times = 8 orbits. We want all of the orbits to be completed within ~10 HST orbits, which means that a 1 or 2 orbit gap within the sequence is acceptable. We enforce this timing by using the visit special requirement: SEQ WITHIN 960M. This program should be executed sometime between 30-JUN-1996 and 20-JUL-1996. If the above sequence extends beyond the available target visibility window, you can drop one of the F555W images. If the program is still too long, you can then also drop one of the F439W images. We have used READ=1 in anticipation of tape storage problems, since we take 13 images each orbit and observe in 8 consecutive orbits. We have used the REQ EPHEM CORR on all exps in order to leave open the possibility of uplinking an ephemeris correction in case it's needed. Please note that we intend to update the comet's orbital elements during the last available opportunity (i.e., prior to final SMS generation). Real_Time_Justification: Comet 22P/Kopff must be observed when it is closest to the Earth. As the geocentric distance varies rather slowly, the acceptable window covers approximately 20 days centered on 10 July 1996. The 8 requested orbits must be contiguous or next to contiguous (to be optimized at a later stage). We have an approved program to observe cometary nuclei with ISOCAM and comet 22P/Kopff is a priority target. Thanks to the high sensitivity and good spatial resolution of ISOCAM, it will be possible to detect the thermal emission (8-15 microns) of the nuclei above the contribution of the coma. Due to different constraints, it is entirely excluded to consider simultaneous HST-ISO observations. However, it will be possible to compare the visible (HST) and the infrared (ISO) light curves and to derive the albedo of the nuclei following a method extensively used on asteroids and on a few cometary nuclei ( e.g., P/Arend-Rigaux). In addition, high resolution ground-based CCD images will be obtained over a period overlapping the HST observations in order to complement them and to put them in a broader interval of cometary activity.
