Free format text (please update) We propose to obtain WFPC2 images in the F814W and F450W filters to study the morphologies and internal colors (rest- frame UV) of a moderately large sample of 36 galaxies with z > 1\ and L(ionO2 3727 Angstrom) > 10^42 ergs\ s^-1\ identified with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck 10 m, in two 7'* 2'\ strips covering the Hawaii Deep Fields SSA13 and SSA22. (The high ionO2 luminosity implies that these galaxies are undergoing intense star formation with \dot M ~ 100 Msun\ yr^-1.) The central regions of the strips have already been imaged with HST and to cover the sample we require two further pointings for each of the two fields. The total time requested is 48 orbits. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: For a `typical' I = 23\ galaxy, the central surface brightness in a wide-field pixel is 27, and the measured typical value at 1^ \ is approximately I = 29\ in a WFC pixel. The latter value produces a count rate of 1.0 * 10^-2 e^-/sec/pixel\ through the F814W filter. By comparison the sky background at the field ecliptic latitudes is I = 27.2\ per WFC pixel giving 4 * 10^-2 e^-/sec/pixel. Assuming 1800s sub-exposures to provide clean cosmic ray rejection and sky cleaning, and 5e^-/pixel read noise, the sky-dominated noise/exposure/pixel becomes 11e^-\ and the S/N = 1.3 in 0.5 hrs. Requiring a S/N = 4/pixel then implies roughly a six- orbit exposure. A similar exposure is required in the B images to study the internal colors. Experience with HST deep data is consistent with these estimates. The data analysis will be carried out on an existing Sparc 10 workstation belonging to the P.I. Existing IDL programs will be used to process the frames using median sky generation and cosmic ray rejection routines. Image enhancement will be performed on subsampled data using the Lucy-Richardson algorithm and these images used for final taxonomic classification and color analysis. Real_Time_Justification: None.
