Our results suggest that a significant fraction of intermediate-redshift Ly-alpha\ absorbers arise in very extended gaseous regions around galaxies. However, with existing ground-based images we are unable to clearly resolve the galaxies we identify. Thus we cannot tell how QSO absorption characteristics depend on galaxy morphological type, structural parameters, or angular inclinations and orientations. Here we propose to obtain high -resolution WFPC2 images of carefully selected fields centered on HST target QSOs. We will then have the exciting possibility of carrying out detailed studies of specific galaxies that are already known to be associated with specific QSO absorption systems. For the first time, it will be possible to learn how the QSO absorption characteristics relate to galaxy morphological type, what the gaseous geometry of those galaxies is, and how the inclination and orientation of the galaxy with respect to the QSO line of sight affect the absorption properties. Questions Observing_Description: We plan to acquire high-resolution images of galaxies using WFPC2 with the 702W filter. The galaxies of interest have total magnitudes in the range R ~ 18.5 - 22.0 and redshifts in the range z ~ 0.05 - 0.7. Each field contains between five and 22 ``interesting'' galaxies, with an average of nine interesting galaxies per field. Most of the interesting galaxies can be observed in a single 2.5 * 2.5 arcmin^2 WFPC2 frame. Orientations of the exposures will be chosen to include as many interesting galaxies as possible. Our previous experience indicates that images acquired in one orbit (with exposures of three times 600 s and no dithering) are sufficient to yield accurate measurements of morphology, disk and bulge effective radii and central surface brightnesses, disk-to-bulge ratios, and angular inclinations and orientations for the galaxies of our sample. Specifically, we find that images acquired in one orbit are sufficient to distinguish exponential disk from r^1/4 bulge surface brightness profiles, to determine disk and bulge effective radii to within typically ~ 0.1 arcsec, and to determine angular inclinations and orientations to within typically ~ 0.5 degree. We request 14 images over 14 orbits in order to complete our sample of 23 fields. A sample of this size is required to derive statistically meaningful results and to make full use of the potential of the existing ground-based observations. Each field is centered on a bright (V ~ 16) QSO, but at an exposure time of 600 s per exposure we calculate that only the central five pixels or so will be saturated.
