Free format text (please update) The campaign to find black holes in the centers of galaxies with HST has been highly successful. Major kinematic surveys for central BHs are expected to explode in Cycle 7, with the advent of STIS. In preparation for that, we propose to augment the HST imaging archive of elliptical galaxies. Images by themselves are not only integral to the study of central BHs, they are changing our whole concept of the centers of early-type galaxies. Adding some 28 carefully chosen ellipticals would greatly enhance the archive's flexibility and ability to address a wide variety of problems. Specific classes of galaxies that are now under-represented include massive ellipticals, field ellipticals, and disturbed ellipticals. Enlarging the archive by only ~30\% would double or triple the number of objects in each of these key categories. Associated two-color imaging will provide a rich database for globular cluster programs, surface-brightness- fluctuation distances, stellar populations, and many other programs. We also propose to reimage seven power-law ellipticals that were observed in Cycles 1-2. Dithering plus the improved post-repair PSF will sharpen the resolution by a factor of 3-4 and may reveal tiny cores. This discovery would constitute an important new class of central light profile intermediate between the current cores and power-laws. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Experience shows that 10,000 e^- in the central PC pixel is an ideal exposure level to reveal dust and weak features out to several arcsec. Predicted surface brightnesses (SBs) are fairly reliable for very bright galaxies (M_V > -22.5) but are as low as 18 V mag arcsec^-2 for the brightest objects. To collect 10,000 e^- in V (F555W) would require 12,000 s, or 5 orbits, which is unfeasible. For the brightest galaxies, we therefore drop I and make do with one orbit (~2000 s) in V only, yielding 1500 peak e^-. One short exposure is included to protect against unknown central stellar-like sources. Smaller ellipticals below M_V = -22.5 have highly uncertain central surface brightnesses, with V from 13 to 16 V mag arcsec^-2. We deal with this by taking a series of short and long exposures. All V exposures of the fainter galaxies are box-dithered in half-pixel increments for higher resolution (canned routine) to detect any unresolved power-laws. V-band re-observations of all 7 power-law galaxies are also box-dithered for maximum resolution. I images are taken of 15 nearby target galaxies closer than 2000 km/s for SBF measurements and central color gradients. Long I images are dithered by an even number of pixels to aid CR and hot-pixel removal. Coordinates for 9 objects are still rough owing to mechanical malfunctioning of the DSS jukebox. Will be improved as soon as that is functioning. Real_Time_Justification: None. This proposal benefits from our team's longterm interest in early-type galaxies. We have basic structural data on nearly every bright elliptical over the sky, and spectral and stellar-population information for most northern ones. A comprehensive database for all HST archive ellipticals is under construction. All galaxies selected for the new proposal have central velocity dispersions, global radii and surface brightnesses, and estimated D_n-Sigma distances. Isophote shapes, disturbance parameters, and measures of local galactic density are also being compiled for all objects. John Kormendy is continually observing the best BH candidates at Hawaiian resolution with the sub-arcsecond spectrometer at CFHT.
