Abstract We request a single HST orbit with the GHRS+G270M to observe the bright Seyfert III Zw 2 to confirm a possible ionMg2 absorption system at cz=2,225 kms. At this redshift, this possible cloud is at the far edge of the local supercluster, and thus at the edge of the large void between the local supercluster and the Perseus-Pisces supercluster. The Arecibo redshift survey in this direction allows us to conclude that there are no galaxies brighter than -16.5 within 1.5 h^-1_100 Mpc of this cloud. Since this cloud is so close (m-M)=32, the verification of this cloud's existence with the GHRS would allow a detailed study of a ionMg2 absorber associated with a dwarf galaxy, an intergalactic cloud, or perhaps even with a galaxy void (which would be unprecedented and quite unexpected). But this system must be confirmed before any scientific conclusions can be drawn. A faint galaxy survey of this region is already underway at the NOAO/WIYN telescope with the HYDRA spectrograph to search for possible associated galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Using the GHRS+G270M a \\onequarter Angstrom resolution spectrum covering both the Galactic ionMg2 lines and the possible extragalactic ionMg2 lines (2787-- 2833Angstrom) will be observed. The presence of the strong Galactic lines will provide a useful velocity reference so that the velocity scale can be established to + 15 kms. A single orbit will be sufficient to obtain a signal- to-noise per pixel of 15:1, easily sufficient to confirm these lines. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. We are in the process of conducting a 1degrees radius, pencil -beam galaxy redshift survey of the III Zw 2 region using the NOAO/WIYN telescope with the HYDRA multi-object spectrograph. Approximately 200 galaxies will be observed down to a limiting magnitude of ~ 19th, which corresponds to -14 at the distance to the absorber. Should HST confirm this possible absorber, we will use the VLA in its standard D configuration in the redshifted 21 cm line of ionH1 to search for gas rich dwarfs and intergalactic clouds.
