Free format text (please update) An understanding of present-day stellar populations is prerequisite for understanding stellar populations and galaxy evolution at intermediate-- and high--redshift. While observations of galaxies and proto-galaxies at high redshift are certainly exciting, to interpret these high-z stellar populations requires present-day stellar population templates. Theoretical models are still lacking at the 30-40\% level in matching the stellar populations of present-day galaxies. What is required are accurate spectral energy distributions of a range of real stellar populations, against which both models and high-z data can be compared. Here we propose to obtain high S/N (>20) mid-ultraviolet (2200--3400 Angstrom) spectra of relatively old (>2 Gyr old), nearby stellar populations to fill in crucial gaps in our knowledge. In doing so, we are observing in the one spectral region where FOS is more sensitive than STIS, and where good S/N requires long exposures even with FOS. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The observing requirements for this program are: (a) accessibility to the 2200-3300A region and (b) a minimum S/N of 20 for spectral resolution elements of ~ 8 Angstrom for wavelengths > 2400 Angstrom. All targets are extended sources. Our requirements can only be met in reasonable integration times by using the FOS with the 0.86'' circular aperture (as this is the FOS aperture with the best absolute calibration). FOS/Red (higher sensitivity than FOS/Blue) will be used to obtain two separate spectra for each target: (i) Our primary spectrum: a S/N > 20, 8.0Angstrom\ resolution spectrum for 2200 - 3300 Angstrom (G270H); (ii) A secondary spectrum: a S/N >20, 8.0Angstrom\ resolution spectrum for 3250--4800 Angstrom (G400H). 8.0Angstrom\ resolution is adequate for our measurements of fluxes and line strengths. The justification for using the G270H grating is stated above. The G400H grating is used for 3 reasons: (a) It provides critical calibration overlap with ground-based data necessary to normalize the HST spectra to ground-based spectra. Such calibration is essential to our program. (b) It measures the important NH feature not really accessible from the ground at this spatial resolution (cf. Figure 1). c) It measures other absorption features, such as CN and Ca II at the same spatial resolution as the space-UV data. It also should be noted that the G400H observation for each object is short enough that the number of orbits requested is independent of whether we request it or not. We will propose in Cycle 7 to use STIS to obtain 1200 - 2200 Angstrom and optical/near IR spectra of these objects at the same spatial resolution. FOS target acquisition of each object will be ACQ/PEAK using the G400H grating and the A+B1+C1+E2 mode. This permits evaluation of the background light profile (this was very successful in eliminating contamination for the Cycle 1 M31 cluster data). The number of orbits estimated for each target is based on FOS capabilities for Cycle 6; use of the 0.86'' circular aperture; a 0.01 cts/s dark count; 8Angstrom\ spectral resolution; and S/N>20 at 2500Angstrom\ (G270H) and 3500Angstrom\ (G400H) for the galaxies. Fluxes at 2500Angstrom\ and 3500Angstrom\ were estimated for each target, from ground-based photometry (e.g. Burstein et al. 1987, ApJS, 654, 601) and IUE UV energy distributions for similar objects (Burstein et al. 1988). Bright ellipticals such as those in this sample have mean 1'' central optical surface brightnesses within +/- 2* of each other, not a priori predictable. Typical UV fluxes are \log F_Lambda = - 16.40 and -15.60 (F_Lambda in ergs s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1) at 2500Angstrom\ and 3500Angstrom, respectively. Integration times were confirmed by the STScI FOS Group (thanks to Tony Keyes). Based on our successful HST/FOS experience with the M31 clusters, we expect our estimates of UV brightness to be accurate to about 50\%. Real_Time_Justification: This proposal is a continuation of the Cycle 1 project from which the FOS spectra of M31 globular clusters were obtained. It builds on a 5-year effort by several of us in developing an IUE-based UV spectral library of 2000 stars (O'Connell, Wu, Burstein, Bohlin, Styker, Li, Curtis, Fanelli, in prep.). In related work, Wu and his collaborators continue to work on a final comprehensive stellar spectral atlas of standard stars based on the latest uniformly processeddata from the IUE Final Archive. One of us (RWO) is also a Co-I on the ASTRO-2 Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope experiment, which is investigating the broad-band UV properties of globular clusters and galaxies. Our program will also employ a large database of pre-existing ground-based spectroscopy (cf. Scientific Justification). Calibration_Justification: !
