Free format text (please update) Cycle 4 imaging of z~ 1 radio galaxies has demonstrated that their restframe UV morphologies, which are aligned with the radio axes, are comprised of compact, high surface brightness kpc--scale knots. We propose to employ the unique imaging capabilities of HST to obtain high spatial resolution (~ 0"per1) WFPC2 polarization images of three of the brightest, aligned high redshift (z~1) radio galaxies, 3C265, 3C356 and 3C441. These polarimetric observations are crucial to the understanding of the spectacular morphologies recently discovered in high redshift radio galaxies by HST, and to the investigation of morphological and evolutionary links between radio galaxies and quasars. The objects selected for our study are all known to have highly polarized restframe UV continuum emission based on Keck observations. In addition, Keck spectroscopy of 3C265 (z=0.811) has shown the first evidence of broad, off-nuclear MgII line emission which strongly suggests scattering of radiation from a hidden or `mis-directed' quasar nucleus. The goal of this proposal is to study the kpc--scale spatial distribution of the polarized light and infer the physical properties of the nucleus and detailed spatial structure of the scattering medium in these galaxies. These high spatial resolution observations of prototypical aligned radio galaxies will also provide stringent tests of the radio galaxy -- quasar AGN unification model and the scattering hypothesis for the alignment effect seen in high redshift radio galaxies. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: sectionTarget Observations NOTE: The present Phase II file contains a new target, 3C266 as our second target. Our application for a change of target is currently being considered by STScI. If it is not approved we will submit a revised Phase II template file. The aim of this proposal is to study the rest-frame near-UV continuum polarization of the z ~ 1 radio galaxies 3C265, 3C356 and 3C441 using the WFPC2+POLQ instrument configuration; we will observe 3C265 and 3C356 through the F555W filter and 3C441 through the F450W filter. The choice of the bluer filter for 3C441 is motivated by its smaller emission line contamination and higher polarization at shorter wavelengths (P_B~ 8\%). We will image each target on WF2 and WF4 in two separate observing sessions, each session with the instrument in a different orientation (i.e., telescope in a different roll angle). The relative orientation angle between two observing sessions must be close to 45degrees -- this is an important requirement of our project. The two CCDs (+ polarizer quad) sample orthogonal polarization states and each observing session will allow us to construct one linear Stokes parameter. This method is a compromise between using all four WFPC2 CCDs (PC1, & WF2,3,4) to cover a range of four well separated polarization angles (0degrees, 45degrees, 90degrees and 135degrees), and our desire to avoid any difficulties due to relative calibration errors, different image scales and CCD properties. To maximize our sensitivity to the polarized signal, which will mostly have a polarization position angle orthogonal to the optical major axis for each object, we request that the orientations during the first observing sessions for 3C265 and 3C324 be 150degrees\ and 90degrees\ respectively (and 45degrees\ different during the second session). The WFPC2+POLQ+F555W/F450W combinations maximize throughput for polarized signals with the greatest purity and at the same time avoid contamination of the continuum by strong emission lines. For 3C356, the wavelength range covered ( 2100Angstrom ~lt lambda_rest ~lt 3100Angstrom) is free of contamination by strong emission lines. For 3C265 this combination corresponds to 2600Angstrom ~lt lambda_rest ~lt 3800Angstrom and has a small contamination (~1\%) from OIILambda3727 line. For 3C441, the F450W filter corresponds to the rest wavelength region 2220Angstrom ~lt Lambda ~lt 3050Angstrom which is also free of strong emission lines. From our Keck spectra we derive that the total contamination by all emission lines in the bandpass is <10\% at any location, for both objects. During each observing session for each galaxy we will expose for 4 orbits (~9000s) with the target centered on WF4 and then for 4 orbits with the target centered on WF2. Since we desire an accuracy of ~2\% or better in each Stokes parameter, we need an accuracy of 1.4\% (70Sigma) in each polariser angle. If the clumps in these galaxy are similar to those observed in 3C324, then the typical clump flux density is ~1MuJy, and we require an exposure time of t_exp=9000s per angle. This exposure time allows us to detect a surface brightness of 3.4MuJy/(square)" at 70Sigma, and a surface brightness of 0.4MuJy/(square)" at 10Sigma in a 5x5 pixel box. The three galaxies in our target list are much brighter than 3C324, and we will be therefore able to study fainter 3C324--like clumps and extended low surface brightness features with good signal-to-noise ratio. We therefore request a total of 16 orbits (4x9000s) per galaxy, or a total of 48 orbits. sectionParallel Observations with the FOC In order to maximize the potential of HST for serendipitous discoveries, we request parallel UV imaging observations with the FOC and the F220W filter. Although the FOV of the F/96 relay is small, our integration times will be very long and should reach interestingly faint flux limits. The faint blue galaxy population seen in deep field imaging data is numerous and we should have a reasonable chance of obtaining UV photometry and perhaps morphologies for several such objects. The cost in terms of telescope overhead is negligible and the opportunity for chance discovery using HST's unique UV capabilities is worth the additional effort. Real_Time_Justification: None. Deep Keck spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry of 3C265, 3C356 and 3C441 exist, and further polarimetric and spectroscopic observations of these radio galaxies with the Keck Telescope are planned. In addition, we intend to obtain high spatial resolution deep radio imaging observations (at 3.6cm and 2cm) using the VLA. These data will provide additional important information about the physical conditions such as electron densities and temperatures, ionization parameters, kinematics, scattering media, and location of the radio AGN. For example the off-nuclear broad MgII seen in the Keck spectrum of 3C265 already constrains the electron temperature < 10^6 K if the scatterers are electrons. Calibration_Justification: !
