We are using HST and infrared speckle imaging to calibrate the mass-luminosity relation (MLR) for stars less massive than 0.2 Msun, with special emphasis on objects near the stellar/brown dwarf border. The strategy is to use the combination of HST and continuing ground-based infrared speckle work to examine subarcsecond binary systems in order to determine masses, luminosities, and the spectral energy distributions of objects at the lower end of the main sequence. The potential payoff of this proposal is high because many of the systems selected were resolved with HST in Cycle 5 and mapping of the orbits has commenced. In addition to contributing to fundamental research on very low mass stars and brown dwarfs, an accurate MLR can be broadly used in the fields of spectroscopic, astrometric and cataclysmic binary research, stellar cluster work, planetary searches, and studies of the galactic and ``missing'' mass. This proposal is being coordinated with continuing work of Benedict and Franz. The total number of orbits remaining in the current program is that granted during the Cycle 5 review for Cycles 6 (12 orbits) and 7 (12 orbits), but for scientific reasons, we ask that it be split 14+10 rather than 12+12. Questions Observing_Description: There are 9 targets to be observed in Cycle 6. Eight of these will be observed once each, while GL 748 will be observed 6 times. Most targets will be observed in TRANS mode only, except for GL 22 and GL 748 and their reference stars which will be observed in TRANS+POS (both modes in the same orbit). A POS mode observation will include multiple runs through the following sequence: target, drift star check, reference stars, target, drift star check. Real_Time_Justification: Cycle 6 and 7 observations are essential; without them, the Cycle 5 observations will be of little value. In order to maximize the orbital arcs mapped with HST, it is critical to space observations one year apart. All observations are TRANS mode only unless noted. G 250-29 should have an observation near the beginning of Cycle 6. The following targets should have observations near the end of Cycle 6: GL 22 (TRANS+POS), GL 234, GL 469, GL 473, GJ 1215, GJ 1245, and GJ 2005. GL 748 (TRANS+POS) should have 6 observations spaced over 9 months. Calibration_Justification: Continued LTSTAB observations are essential, given the small numbers of reference stars available for GL 22 and GL 748. Additional_Comments: As of the submission of this RPS2, GL 22, GL 234, GL 469, GL 473, GL 748 (5 times), GJ 1215, and G 250-29 have been resolved in TRANS mode. So, coordinates and scanlengths are ok for these. Attempts at detecting the secondaries in GJ 1245 and GJ 2005 via TRANS mode are pending. So, coordinates and scanlengths have NOT been checked via HST observations for these two targets.
