The images will be searched for companion bodies. Small geocentric distance is necessary for this search to be maximally effective (Delta <= 1.5AU). Images in the F439W, F673N, F791W, F953N, and F1042M filters will define the 1 micron Fe^2+ feature and allow interpretation of compositional differences between the primary and secondary bodies, as well as any brightness variations across the disk(s) as being due solely to albedo, or to compositional variegation. This program was originally intended as a snapshot survey (with a much larger target pool) but a change in procedures since the last asteroid snapshot survey has disallowed this type of observation on moving targets. Revised 12/20/96 to replace seven targets with targets observable after SM97. Questions Observing_Description: Images with the planetary camera (PC) through five filters will be obtained. The filters are F439W, F673N, F791W, F953N, and F1042M. These filters are similar to those used in observing asteroid 4 Vesta (HST GO-5489). They define the continuum in the visible region, and the depth of the 0.9 micron Fe^2+ feature. The WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator indicates that full well (SNR of 230) can be achieved in less than 40 seconds exposure time on an 11th magnitude asteroid (simulated by a G5 spectrum). Thus images in the five filters above will only require 17 minutes plus guidestar acquisition time, even for the faintest asteroids (when observed near closest approach to the Earth). This short exposure time leads to the idea that this project would be best done as a snapshot survey. 132 asteroids were originally selected for this purpose. Of these 18 had particularly good apparitions. This subset is contained in this proposal. The first eight will allow multi-pixel resolution of the asteroidal disk, while the last ten will only be marginally resolved at best. Only the first eight were approved by the TAC, but all will be good candidates for companion searches. An asteroid snapshot survey was performed in cycle 3 (GO-5489, PI Zellner). For cycle 5 the call for proposals was changed to specifically disallow ``snaps'' on moving targets. Apparently the decision to add this restriction was made without any consultation of the planetary community. It may therefore be possible to reverse this decision and use these observations to ``break the ice''-- to drive development of techniques to schedule moving target snaps as easily as fixed target snaps. Eight orbits have been allocated to do the first eight targets in the manner of a normal GO program. The other ten targets could be used as snapshot candidates. This means that not all of the latter would be expected to execute, as is normal with snapshot surveys. It may be necessary, for example, to make the observations under gyro control, instead of the single guidestar that is envisioned. This practice will probably result in missing 1/3 of the scheduled observations, based on previous experience. Working the bugs out on these ten targets will not cripple the science if not all of them are observed, and may allow this useful mode of observation to be opened to the planetary community. Snapshot surveys could be very useful for monitoring the changes in the cloud patterns of the major planets, for example, or for monitoring the brightness of large comets. Real_Time_Justification: We would like these observations to be executed close to each target's closest approach to the Earth. Some of these approach in May of 1996 and so would be candidates for early execution.
