Free format text (please update) We are studying the evolution of normal galaxies over the last two-thirds of the age of the Universe through HST imaging of fields from our deep CFRS and LDSS redshift surveys. In Cycle 6, we propose to obtain B-band images of a large sample of field galaxies with measured redshifts 0 < z < 1.3 that will have been observed in the I-band in Cycle 5. The B-band images are required to (a) separate the colors of bulge and disk components in regular symmetric galaxies; (b) determine the nature of individual components identified within more irregular or asymmetric galaxies; (c) search for compact blue nuclei in lower z objects where there is evidence for high ionization line spectra; (d) determine the colors of faint companions to study the role of intereactions in triggering star-formation; and (e) construct an atlas of far-ultraviolet morphologies of galaxies that may be used to interpret the very deepest HST images. The B-band data is essential for studying the star-formation histories of the bulges, disks and star-burst components, and thus for understanding the physical causes of the differential evolution that has now been seen in the faint galaxy population. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The proposed F450W observations are similar to those carried out by us in Cycle 4: three-orbit WFPC2/F450W observations with POS TARG offsets to remove cosmic rays and chip defects. The exposure time used in Cycle 4 was found to be adequate for our scientific bulge/disk/residual analysis (see for example Plate 2 in Schade et al, ApJL, in press, Sep 10 issue). We request 57 orbits to observe (a) the 12 CFRS/LDSS fields that were only observed in F814W in Cycle 5 and (b) the 7 ``Groth strip'' fields that lie in our CFRS 1415+52 field. These latter fields were previously observed by the WF/PC GTO team in the red bands F606W and F814W. We already have redshifts for about 70 of the galaxies with I_AB < 22.5 in this ``strip'' (from the original CFRS and also supplementary WHT observations carried out in May 1995), and thus we are analyzing this archival data as part of our Cycle 5 program. We are requesting F450W observations to provide the same spectral leverage on these galaxies as will be available for the rest of our sample. There are no unusual calibration requirements. Real_Time_Justification: There are no special requirements. The B-band observations should be carried out at the same roll-angle and pointing centers as the I-band images taken in Cycle 5. However, the roll-angle for the Cycle 5 images was deliberately chosen to be the single angle (+/- 1 degree) that maximized the schedulability of the observation, so repeating it should be straightforward. The combined CFRS-LDSS team has access to excellent instrumentation on most of the world's 4-m class telescopes. Focusing our efforts on our 28 WFPC-2 fields clustered in 8 survey areas, we are using ground-based spectroscopy to powerfully augment the HST imaging. At CFHT, the ARGUS integral field spectrograph and SIS image-stabilized multi- slit spectrograph are being used to study the spatially resolved internal kinematics of our HST galaxies at z > 0.5 (Mallen-Ornelas et al, in preparation). Fig. 5 shows rotation curves along the major and minor axis of the Sc galaxy CFRS 14.0393 at z = 0.602 that is shown in Fig 2. Such kinematic data is being used to construct scaling relations such as Tully-Fisher at high redshift (to search for evidence of luminosity evolution within individual objects) and to secure evidence for merger activity in objects with asymmetric morphologies. In the infrared, we are using a new multi- object infrared spectrograph (OSIS) on CFHT and, from 1996, a novel OH-suppression spectrograph on UKIRT, to search for OII 3727 emission line sources at z >= 1.3 and to measure the redshifted HAlpha line so as to determine the star-formation rate (using the Kennicutt (1992) relation) as a function of morphological type. Finally, we are continuing to use the WHT and CFHT to extend the spectroscopic redshift surveys in the areas imaged by HST so as to secure redshift identifications for objects for which we have images but no redshift information to date. We are also pursuing imaging at other wavelengths. In particular, the 1415+52 field (which includes the ``Groth strip'') has been observed with the VLA to Mu-Jy levels (Fomalont et al 1995) and will be observed with ISO in the mid-infrared (P.I. Hammer). We have already identified most of the Mu-Jy radio sources (Hammer et al 1995) in this field and are currently analyzing our HST images of 20 of them. None of these ground-based observations are time- critical or need to be coordinated in any way with the proposed HST observations. Calibration_Justification: !
