Date: Thu Feb 1 14:59:17 EST 1996 Proposal_Information Title: Cooled Gas in X-Ray Emitting Elliptical Galaxies Proposal_Category: GO Scientific_Category: GALAXIES & CLUSTERS Cycle: 6 Investigators PI_Name: Joel Bregman PI_Institution: University of Michigan CoI_Name: Patricia Knezek CoI_Institution: Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington Contact: Abstract: There are two fundamental predictions of the current popular model for X-ray emitting gas in individual elliptical galaxies: the origin of the gas is stellar mass loss, and the X-ray emission cools the gas, leading to cooled material that is distributed through the galaxy. We can test these predictions by determining the amount of cool, metal-rich gas within the hot atmospheres. This will be accomplished by measuring the equivalent widths of absorption lines from cooled material (ionMg2, ionFe2) against the continuum of background quasars that we discovered. We propose observations for three early-type systems: NGC 4203, which has a bright quasar projected only 6 kpc (1min point9) from its center; NGC 720, an X-ray bright system with a quasar projected 33 kpc (6min point5) from the center; and NGC 4261, which has the most extensive hot atmosphere and where the quasar is projected 36 kpc (6min point7) from the center. Questions Observing_Description: Observing times are justified above, and here we summarize the observing program. Acquisition of the target will take place with the BINARY search on the FOS, followed by a FOS/RED observation for each target. Standard calibrations for the FOS is adequate. Flat fielding limitations may prevent us from obtaining a S/N > 30 and the S/N listed below are due to photon statistics only. 0.25truein begintabularlccc &FOS/RED + G270H (2230-3270 AA:&\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ionMg2 &ionFe2) & , Galaxy & \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\# orbits & t_exp & S/N (@ ionMg2) , NGC 720& 3 & 121 min& 30 , NGC 4203& 1 & 29 min& 46 , NGC 4261& 2 & 75 min& 39 , endtabular Real_Time_Justification: None. NOTE: A check with the PI in mid-November 1996 indicated that there were no changes to the magnitudes. - Ray Lucas Target_Number: 2 Target_Name: QSO1219+057 Alternate_Names: Description: GALAXY,GALAXY Position: RA=12H 19M 48.94S +/- 0.7",DEC=05D 45' 31.4" +/- 0.8",PLATE-ID=01UQ Equinox: J2000 RV_or_Z: Flux: V = 18.1+/-0.6 Comments: We wish to provide recent quasar magnitudes (as close to the HST observations as feasible), so we wish to be informed as to the dates of the planned HST observations.
