This deficiency severely impacts our ability to quantify the energetics of the various processes taking place in dwarf novae systems. We propose a modest program using the Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) on the HST to determine the parallaxes of three of the best known dwarf novae (SS Cyg, U Gem, and SS Aur). Currently, the distances to these three objects are only known to within a factor of ~ two. We show that the positional accuracy achievable by the FGS will result in distances to these three objects good to +/-10\%. Such precise distances will allow us to accurately calibrate the luminosities of these systems, to quantify the accretion rate, and allow us to derive information about the structure of the accretion disk. Accurate distances will also allow us to calibrate secondary distance determination techinques (such as the technique of infrared spectroscopic parallax). To accomplish our program requires a total of twelve HST orbits in Cycle 6. Questions Observing_Description: Observe SS Cyg, SS Aur, U Gem and associated refrence stars at two different epochs in Cycle 6 (and an additional epoch in cycle 7). For SS Cyg observations should be scheduled for maximum parallax factor dates of December, 1996, and June 1997. For SS Aur the observations should be made during September 1996, and March 1997.
