Abstract We propose high spatial resolution imaging with the HST Planetary Camera 2 in order to resolve very tight clusters of massive stars at birth in the Magellanic Clouds. These are the youngest massive stars accessible to direct observations at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. Situated in an extremely rare category of \h2 regions in the Magellanic Clouds (diameters ranging from 4'' to 10'' only), these stars should rank among the hottest ones in these galaxies, as inferred from the exceptionally high nebular O III(4959Angstrom+5007Angstrom)/HBeta ratios. Using medium-band continuum filters, we will place the resolved components on H- R diagrams to obtain their masses and evolutionary states. Imaging in the He II 4686 Angstrom\ line will identify the hottest components of the tight clusters, and will provide estimates for the effective temperatures. Imaging in HBeta, O III, and HAlpha will allow us to correct for the extinction and for the nebular emission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6535( 4) - 04/16/97 16:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have 3 targets, 1 in the LMC and 2 in the SMC to be observed with PC2 through various narrow and medium band filters. A UBVI-like photometry will use medium-band continuum filters U (F410M), B (F467M), V (F547M) and I (F814W) in order to avoid the nebular emission lines. Comparison of the medium-band U with ``Wide U'' F300W will allow us to estimate the nebular continuum contribution and provide additional leverage in the T_eff-vs-reddening parameter space. We will in general obtain two sets of exposures (each CR split) in each filter, a short one to cover the brighter embedded stars and a longer one to obtain enough S/N on the fainter components. Note that because of extinction (1 to 3 mag V) and the anticipated range of T_eff (10000 to 60000 K), the most massive stars will generally not be the brightest objects in all filters. Narrow-band filters to be used for obtaining information about several aspects of the compact \\h2 regions will be He II (F469N), O III (F502N), HBeta (F487N), and HAlpha (F656N). All this amounts to 144 exposures (each CR split) with PC2. As an example for exposure time calculations, here are those we propose for the target SMC N81. Assuming that all the 11.50 magnitude of N81 comes from two identical stars, we get V=12.25 for each of them. Using a de-reddened magnitude of 12.10, an absolute magnitude of -6.8 is derived from a distance modulus of 18.9 (Westerlund 1990, A&A Rev 2, 29). We use Eq. (6.1) of the HST WFPC2 Handbook to calculate the number of electron counts per sec. We take a B0 spectral type to estimate the filter responses, since the brightest stars have Rayleigh-Jeans slopes in our spectral range. The required monochromatic magnitudes, AB_Nu, are taken from Table 6.1, and the efficiencies of the filters, \\int Q(Lambda)T(Lambda)dLambda/Lambda, from Table 6.2. We get corrected magnitudes, V_c, using the corresponding E(Lambda- V) values. The results are also cross-checked with the WFPC2 exposure time calculator on the WWW. The resulting counts per sec and maximum exposure times to stay within the 27000 e^- pix^-1 saturation level, taking into account the point spread function sampling on the PC2 chip, are detailed in columns 6 and 7 of the following Table. begincenter Table 1. The long sets will consist of 4 exposures, each of which is 3 times the unit exposure (column 7), or the nearest quantized value for WFPC2. This allows for CR detection and avoids blooming (at 90000 e^- pix^-1 in the central pixel for 7 e^- ADU gain). With 4 coadded exposures we will get a S/N ratio of 3 for stars 10 mag fainter than the bright ones used in Table 1. V=22.3 corresponds to typical stars of 2 M_\\odot at distance moduli of 18--19 mag. In order to safeguard against saturation in the case that the brightest object is single and has bright WR-like emission lines affecting the estimated count rates in the medium and narrow filters, we add 2 (for CR detection) short exposures of ~ 20\\% unit exposure. These short exposures combined will give S/N ratios of about 200 for the brightest stars and of about 5 for stars 6 mag fainter. Now we consider the effects of the nebular continuum and emission lines. The observed F(HBeta) = 1.45 * 10^-11 erg s^-1 cm^-2 is distributed over pi.6''.3^2=125 arcsec^2. This gives 2.3 * 10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2 pix^-1 at the PC2 resolution. In an \\h2 region of T_e=13000 K the nebular continuum is ~ 0.8 * 10^-3 of the HBeta line emission in the 4000 to 6000Angstrom\\ range, corresponding to ~ 2 * 10^-19 erg s^-1 cm^-2 pix^-1. This is equivalent to ~ 25.5 mag pix^- 1 or 23.8 mag per 10 typical pixels for a star. Consequently, we do not need to worry about the nebular continuum. The nebular emission line images HAlpha, HBeta, and O III will be at least 1200 times brighter, and thus will be about as bright as the B8 stars. The total exposure times, in minutes, requested for each filter, are given in column 8 of the above Table 1. These estimates include the 3 min overhead per exposure for the 5 consecutive exposures. The total orbit estimate for N81 is then obtained using the 7.5 or 6 min GS ACQ overheads and limiting the number of exposures to 14 per orbit. This amounts to 4 orbits. The two other targets, N88 and N159-5, will require 5 orbits each since they need comparatively longer exposure times due to their higher extinctions.
