Free format text (please update) 32 Cyg belongs to the category of Zeta Aurigae binaries which provide the rare opportunity to examine the outer atmospheres of late type giants and supergiants. In such systems the dwarf component serves as an astrophysical light-source which can be used to probe the chromosphere and wind of the evolved primary. 32 Cyg is the only system where a K supergiant can be studied without complication due to an extended H II region. Our experience with Zeta Aur observed with the GHRS in Cycle 2 demands an independent reference star to test and adjust the model conception. We request time for GHRS observations of line profiles of singly ionized metals at 5 orbital phases (3 ingress, 1 total eclipse, and 1 egress observation). The required modelling codes, especially the 2-D/3-D radiative transfer scheme has been developed and tested already for the Zeta Aur analysis. The main objectives of this proposal are (1) to determine the density, wind velocity, and microturbulence as a function of the radial position, (2) to determine the mass loss rate, (3) to study the fine structure population of the lowest Fe II terms and the Fe II UV 9/UV 191 pumping process, (4) to deduce the kinetic temperature and electron density, (5) to study the symmetry of the K star atmosphere. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will acquire 32 Cyg with the N1 mirror, except during eclipse when mirror N2 will be used, and use the SSA for the echelle spectra. FP-SPLITs will be used for each exposure to keep the fixed pattern noise from dominating the S/N of the spectra. Since we require high wavelength accuracy in order to measure absolute line shifts and radial velocities, we include WAVECAL exposures for particular Echelle and medium resolution observations ; we have attempted to have at least one WAVCAL per orbit. Wavelength matching between different spectra at each phase and between phases will be done using interstellar features. The proposed wavelengths windows are given in Table 1. Chromospheric phase spectra are also acquired at epochs 1 or 2 to determine the background stellar continuum. The observable lines belong to different diagnostic categories: - Density, wind velocity, and microturbulence (inner wind): Ti II UV 5 and 10; V II UV 1,10,11,12; Ti III UV 1,2 - Density, wind velocity, and microturbulence (outer wind): Si II UV 2, 3, 4; Fe II UV 1, 3, 6, 8, 9 (different fine structure levels); S II UV 1; O I UV 2 - Kinetic temperature, electron density (fine structure population of quartet terms): Fe II UV 37, 38, 39, 42, 43, 62, 63, 68; pumping Fe II UV 9/UV 191; Ti II/Ti III - Envelope symmetry: Fe II, Ti II, V II lines, Rayleigh scattering - B dwarf spectral energy distrbution: G140L Typical fluxes (in units of 10(-11) erg cm(-2) s(-1) A(-1) ) are 3.5 at 1250 A, 2 at 1800 A, and 1 at 3000 A: therefore the requested exposure times should provide S/N per diode between 50 and 80. During Phase II the 1300A region G160M spectra were moved to G140M to give better balance between the two sides.
