Free format text (please update) The ejecta from Eta Car (LBV, most luminous star in the Galaxy, pre-SN?) comprise the Homunculus nebula, a dense dusty bipolar-shaped, predominantly reflection, nebula surrounded by a fast-moving fragmented shell. The velocity vectors of these fragments point back to Eta Car and indicate an ejection in the middle of the last century. Why a single star should eject mass in a clearly non-spherically symmetric way is not understood, but a deeper understanding can only follow from the 3-D geometry of the ejection nebula, the Homunculus. A novel method of exploring the 3-D shape of the Homunculus through imaging polarimetry is proposed to resolve the controversy on its real shape. By imaging the sub-arcsec knots and filaments in the Homunculus in polarized light, their position along the line of sight can be determined using a geometrical model with dust scattering for the nebula. By observing at a number of wavelengths, a detailed model of the scattering properties of the dust in the Homunculus can be made and then applied to determine the geometry. Careful selection of the filter passbands in which to perform polarimetry will allow the effect of emission lines on continuum scattering to be assessed, especially for the knots in the close vicinity of Eta Car. The result will be a clearer picture of the geometry of the ejection nebula from a massive star, thus enabling the fundamental questions of ejection mechanisms to be addressed. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: The Homunculus nebula and Eta Carinae will be imaged with the WFC+PC chips in five filters together with the Polarizer POLQ filter to map the polarization structure at 0.1'' scales. The filters have been chosen with regard to wide wavelength coverage (to enable a good model of the dust scattering function to be determined) and low contamination of scattered continuum by emission lines. For each filter and position of the Polarizer POLQ, short (order a few sec) and longer 100 -- 800s exposures (depending on filter - detector efficiency and nebula surface brightness) would be obtained to give the core unsaturated and deep images of the nebulosity. In addition images without the Polarizer QUAD are to be obtained in order to precisely register the polarizer images, since the peak position in polarized light may not correspond to the peak in total flux on account of scattering in the source. Additional exposures without the Polarizer in filters F218W and F953N were added to fill unused target visibility. These are very useful probes of the scattering efficiency at short and long wavelengths respectively. The F953N data will be used to match the HST observations to ground based adaptive optics observations in the near-IR, scheduled on the ESO 3.6m in March 1996. In calculating exposure times, the WFPC2 images of the Homunculus (PI Sparks) have been examined, with allowance made for the Polarizer. For example, for the F375N filter, an exposure time of 800s per POLQ position angle will result in about 170 ADU's per 0.1''^2 pixel in the faintest outer regions, allowing a percentage polarization accuracy of ~4% per pixel (neglecting systematics). We have adopted strategy 1a of the WFPC2 Science Report 95-01 although the calibration results are not yet known with accuracy. Images with POLQ and the filters are taken in the PC1, followed by WF2, WF3 and WF4 all with the same orient. The aim is for polarization accuracy of 4% or better and a spatial resolution of 0.2''. The former figure is realistic given the high polarization in the Homunculus and the latter figure allows some spatial degradation concomitant on sequential placing of the target on the CCD's. The lowest polarization (over Eta Car) is ~3% and the highest ~40%. From the available polarization modelling, typical differences in the polarization of the near and far sides of the shell would be 10-20% so that errors of ~5% would enable the science to be done, although our polarimetric experience shows that very high signal ensures that only systematics dominate.
