Abstract We propose to investigate the vertical aerosol structure of Jupiter's atmosphere, and its spatial and temporal variability, in conjunction with nearly simultaneous observations by the uniquely well positioned but data-limited Galileo Orbiter. Our Cycle 6 observations are targeted to broaden the perspective of the spatially-, temporally-, and spectrally-limited sampling of Jupiter by Galileo, thus providing a strategic supplement to the atmospheric science derived from the Galileo mission. In addition, the high- spatial-resolution global coverage provided by HST imagery provides an essential component in a larger, comprehensive research campaign to acquire and analyze synoptic observations of Jupiter's atmosphere in order to understand the planet's dynamic meteorology. The wide-field option of the WF/PC2 instrument will be used with filters and observing sequences chosen to optimize the determination of vertical cloud structure. Additionally, our observing sequences will be merged with those proposed separately by Beebe et al. to elucidate questions about Jupiter's dynamics in order to integrate and optimize each investigation. Features to be observed within our global imagery include not only those slated to be scrutinized by Galileo during Cycle 6 --- the Great Red Spot and a 5-micron hot spot --- but also important contextual features and surrounding territory which the data-limited spacecraft simply can not observe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6509( 11) - 05/20/97 09:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose a series of observations using the Wide Field camera with a set of filters and an observing strategy optimized to provide information on the vertical structure of spatially resolved features on Jupiter simultaneously with Galileo observations of the region around the Great Red Spot (orbit G1 -- June 1996) and a 5-micron hot spot (orbit C9 -- June 1997). In the ultraviolet (F218W, F255W, F336W) Rayleigh scattering by atmospheric gas permits only the uppermost parts of the atmosphere to be seen, so any features seen in this filter will be due to stratospheric haze resulting from photochemical or auroral processes. In the near-infrared (F953N) Rayleigh scattering and scattering from stratospheric haze are both negligible, and the features seen are due to tropospheric condensation clouds or material brought up from the deep atmosphere via convection. In a similar fashion, methane absorption limits visibility in the 893 nm band filter to the upper regions of the atmosphere, while continuum photons (F953N, F673N) show much deeper regions. The F410M filter is a close match to the the SSI Violet filter (405 nm), and we propose to obtain images with it to solidify the links between our observations and those of Galileo. In addition to using a set of filters optimized for vertical structure resolution, we propose to obtain observations on several successive orbits to obtain complete center-to-limb coverage, using the varying Jovian air mass above a given feature to further refine the vertical structure resolution given by the filter set described above. Three successive orbits will be needed in each of our two visits to follow the region of particular interest all the way across Jupiter's disk. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our two visits should be scheduled to provide maximum support to orbits G1 and C9 of the Galileo mission. Since the amount of remote sensing data that can be returned from Galileo is severely limited by the absence of the High Gain Antenna, the HST observations will be providing global context for Galileo's observations of the Great Red Spot on orbit G1 and a 5-micron hot spot on orbit C9. Because of the highly variable nature of features in Jupiter's atmosphere at the spatial scales which our observations and the Galileo remote sensing instruments can resolve, it is exceedingly important that these observations take place as near in time as possible to the associated Galileo encounters --- preferably on the same day. Only in this way will we be assured that we are, indeed, characterizing the same atmospheric features with both sets of instruments. The Galileo G1 encounter takes place on June 26-27, 1996, which is nominally during the last week of Cycle 5. It was not possible for us to propose our G1 observations during the regular Cycle 5 proposal submission period because at that time the G1 encounter was scheduled to take place a week later, just barely into Cycle 6. The time of the G1 encounter was not changed until after the Jupiter Orbital Insertion burn in December 1995. Therefore we request that our first visit take place a few days before the nominal starting date for Cycle 6.
