White CoI_Institution: Space Telescope Science Institute Contact: Abstract: Spectroscopy of three interesting compact OB groups in the LMC will be performed with FOS, to pursue a study of the upper IMF begun with WFPC UBV images in Cycles 3 and 4, which newly resolved them into multiple stellar components. They include the massive central object and an O3 III + OB system in the giant shell H II region N11, and a WN + OB group in the 30 Dor periphery. These observations will provide information relevant to the upper stellar mass limit, as well as the evolutionary relationships between peculiar objects and their normal OB companions. The spectroscopy is also essential to define the upper HRD and IMF, since the temperatures and masses of O stars are indeterminate from continuum measurements such as UBV photometry alone. Previous ground- based spectroscopy has integrated over several comparable components in these objects; only the optically corrected HST/FOS can observe their spectra separately. From 6 to 15 components in each group will be observed and analyzed to determine their individual physical parameters and collective evolutionary status. Questions Observing_Description: We have specified three targets in the Observation Summary, but as explained in the Scientific Justification we propose to observe 15, 6, and 12 stars within the three clusters, within total fields of less than 10"\\ in each case. UBV magnitudes have been measured from the Cycles 3/4 WFPC images and used to calculate the spectroscopic exposure times. The relevant magnitudes are in the 12-15 range; we require the 0sec point3 aperture due to crowding and S/N = 100, based on our experience with similar types of stars in the Galactic starburst NGC 3603 (GO 5445), to compensate the relatively low G400H resolution for blue-violet spectral classification and atmospheric analysis. Our detailed target-acquisition strategies, exposure-time estimates, and resultant orbit requirements are as follows. 0.5truecm noindent Target- acquisition strategy: Since the relative positions of the stars in each cluster are known from our WF/PC or WFPC2 images, we can use offsets to move the telescope from one star to the next without acquiring each one individually. In a given cluster, we will first acquire an isolated offset star (within 15-25"\\ of the cluster center) with ACQ/BIN in the 4sec point3 aperture. Then, we will use the known offset to move the telescope to one of the target stars in the cluster. A 5-stage peak-up will be used to center the star in the 0sec point3 aperture and obtain its spectrum. The telescope will then slew from star to star, using the known offsets. To minimize the error in the position of the telescope and make sure that the stars are always centered in the aperture, we will perform a 2-stage ACQ/PEAK with the 0.3 aperture (5 * 5 0.17 steps followed by 5 * 5 0.05 steps) every 4 stars. This strategy was suggested by the FOS Instrument Scientist and was successfully used for our Cycle 4 program on NGC 3603. 0.5truecm noindent Example of exposure-time calculation: According to the Cycle 6 FOS manual, the count rate is given by N_Lambda = (F_Lambda / S_Lambda) * T_Lambda. At 4400 Angstrom, a star with B = 12.38 (HD 32228-1) has F_Lambda = 6.98 * 10^-14 \\ erg \\ cm^-2 \\ s^-1. The FOS/RD + G400H inverse sensitivity at this wavelength is S_Lambda = 1.1 * 10^-15, and T_Lambda = 0.83 for the 0.3 aperture. Therefore, we get N_Lambda = 53 counts/second/diode. To get a S/N ratio of 100, we need to integrate t = 100^2 / 53 = 188 s = 3 minutes. 0.5truecm noindent Number of orbits: The CVZ visibility is 96 minutes. The stars range from B = 12.5 (3 min integration) to B = 15.5 (50 minutes). For our first cluster (HD 32228), we need 247 minutes of integration time, 6 min overhead for each integration, 10 sec to slew from one star to the next, one offset star ACQ/BIN (9 min), one 5-stage ACQ/PEAK (56 min), and three 2-stage ACQ/PEAK (3 * 27 min), for a total of 5 orbits. Analogous calculations lead to 4 orbits for LH10- 3209 and 6 for HDE 269828, for a grand total of 15 orbits in the CVZ. Real_Time_Justification: Our targets satisfy the definition of the ``heart'' of the CVZ in the Call for Proposals, and we request allocation/implementation as such to benefit from the increased efficiency. As explained in the Scientific Justification, these spectroscopic observations are based upon and constitute followup of new information derived from WFPC images obtained during previous cycles.
