High-spatial resolution WFPC2 images of easily observed bipolars -- specifically, very bright bipolar PNe -- provide detailed snapshots of evolving bipolars. We propose to obtain narrow- band WFPC2 images with a critical spatial resolution of 10^15 cm, to be coupled with ground-based measurements of the internal kinematics, in order to provide crucial constraints for the numerical hydro codes which we have been developing for a decade. There are two secondary goals. The geometry and density of the elusive disks surrounding the nuclear wind source almost certainly ordains the morphological fate of a bipolar nebula from its earliest state of evolution. We propose to detect and characterize these disks. Also, the same WFPC2 images will allow us to search directly for strong filamentary shocks in the lobes of PNs. The shocks cannot be isolated without spatial resolutions 0."1. Models predict that such shocks are highly oblique and therefore weak; however, a growing body of ground-based spectrophotometric measurements seem to suggest that shocks are bright, and that they play a significant role in the nebular structure, energetics, and evolution. Questions Observing_Description: WFPC2 images of selected bipolar planetary nebulae ranging in size from 30" to 240". Calibrated images taken through narrow band filters will be flux calibrated, aligned, and divided in order to obtain line flux ratios. The scientific aim is to interpret the line ratio images in terms of hydrodynamic modles containing the physics of heating and cooling by shocks and photoionization processes. COMMENT 1. ** IT IS CRUCIAL TO OPERATE THE WFPC IN ITS LINEAR REGIME. COMMENT 2. Some targets barely fits in the WFPC - and only if they are carefully oriented along one of the WFPC2's principal axes. See comments to visits for more details.
