Abstract ((This abstract is unchanged from the original Phase I version.)) --- The ``homunculus'', massive ejecta from Eta Carinae, is one of the most remarkable of all known bipolar objects. Its large, ragged equatorial debris-disk is particularly ill-understood, and we now suspect that this structure is critical for understanding the instability that caused Eta's Giant Eruption. By extension, this event and its morphology are important for the topic of LBVs and the top of the HR diagram. Some very successful recent HST data, including HRS observations in our Cycle 5 program, turn out to be unexpectedly relevant to the equatorial structure. Our HRS data, however, were of a tentative nature because the observing technique was tricky and had to be verified. Now those observations need to be extended. The applications are diverse. First, we need additional HRS wavelength coverage in order to see ions other than Fe II. Altogether these are needed for measuring the physical conditions in the unusual ejecta blobs and for understanding the peculiar excitation mechanisms. Equally important, we need additional observations farther out in the equatorial structure, mainly to discover the velocity structure (which is predicted to be different among various models) and also for other purposes. Finally, it is important to look for changes between Cycles 5 and 6, since this region is the site of recent radio and X-ray ``outbursts'' and has a history of spectroscopic fluctuation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The observing plan for GO 6501 is much like our Cycle 5 program GO 6041; the GHRS wavelength coverage and target list have been extended, and the FOS target list covers the new HRS targets. Some of the new observations are near- duplicates of data obtained in GO 6041, because spectroscopic variability is likely to occur in Eta Car and its ejecta. Note, incidentally, that special catalog ZZZQ greatly increases the number of available acquisition and guide stars for Eta Car. --- Visit 1 (one orbit) is designed to obtain high-quality WFPC2 (PC) images. We use a wide range of exposure times in order to sample a large range of surface brightnesses; then of course we'll combine the data appropriately. Exposure times are based on experience imaging this object in Cycles 4 and 5. (Comparisons with our earlier images will certainly measure the expansion of the ejecta nebula, and we hope that other changes will also appear. Moreover, the central object is saturated in all the previous WFPC2 UV images, a deficiency we can now remedy.) We use filters F336W and F631N because they are the only WFPC2 filters that get direct and reflected CONTINUUM light in the unusually messy spectrum of Eta Car, relatively uncontaminated by bright emission lines. (Filter F631N is an unconventional choice: It samples continuum because Eta Car does not have [OI] 6300 emission, and it is narrow enough so that we can use reasonable exposure times even though Eta Car is very bright at red wavelengths.) --- Visit 2 (four orbits) uses the GHRS to observe gas blobs that are 0.2 to 3 arcsec from the central star. This is an extension of our successful Cycle 5 program in two ways: (1) We need more wavelength coverage on the brightest target blob, in order to measure additional emission lines; and (2) additional targets are now included so we can see whether fainter, outer blobs show the same weird fluorescent excitation as the inner ejecta. (Precise radial velocities of the additional targets are also needed and can be provided for the first time by these obervations.) Appropriate exposure times for the inner, bright targets are known from our Cycle 5 observations; exposure times for the fainter targets are based on relative brightnesses seen in a UV PC image. Our Cycle 5 observations showed that the required high spatial resolution, using the small HRS aperture, is feasible. NOTE -- "ORIENT" requirement for the GHRS program: Because of the detailed arrangement of the innermost targets, we do not the corners of the HRS aperture to point near the NE,SE,SW,NW directions; therefore the spacecraft U3 (or V3) axis should avoid those directions. This means that the U3 or V3 axis SHOULD point within say +/- 20 degrees of N, E, S, or W; a fourfold symmetry. This is a fairly easy requirement because about 160 days per year are OK; however, only one of the four possibilities could be specified in the ORIENT requirement (see Comments for Visit 2). --- Visit 3 (four orbits) uses the FOS to observe some of the same targets. FOS data are needed so that we can see the overall spectrum of which the HRS data are high-resolution subsets. Our FOS observations are unconventional in two respects: (1) We use FOS/BL (even with grating G570H), because Eta Car is too bright for FOS/RD at visual and red wavelengths. (Specifically, the H-alpha emission line would greatly exceed the allowable limits for FOS/RD, and two or three other lines would be dangerous too.) Fortunately we do not need a good calibration of G570H, which is used to sample emission lines in the 4800--5500 A range. (2) For the central star and a bright inner blob, we use the smallest FOS aperture (0.1-PAIR) in order to keep the H- gamma and H-beta emission-line count rates below the FOS limits. The brightnesses are known from pre-COSTAR FOS observations, and 0.1-PAIR is safe but aperture 0.3 might produce dangerously high count rates on the central star. We do not need a calibration of the aperture throughput for our purposes -- in fact we'd prefer the pipeline processing to be done without any aperture corrections at all. As this is written we do not yet have Cycle 5 FOS data to assist the exposure-time planning. The FOS acquisition is difficult because we need high precision. For Eta Car the exact location found by a peakup depends slightly on the aperture size, and RPS2 did not allow us to specify successive peakups using slightly different centers for the search pattern. Therefore the acquisition plan given here seems inefficient and can probably be improved by FOS specialists. ADDITIONAL REMARK ABOUT ACQUISITION: Here we use unusual combination of FOS/BL/G570H, with only wvls 4600--4800 A enabled in order to avoid bright H-beta emission and other emission lines. We used this same strange setup back in 1991, in a project that attained spatial resolution that was unusual (maybe unique) for the pre-COSTAR FOS. If it is necessary to do the acquisition with grating G270H instead, then we won't know the resulting position as well, because diffuse stuff within 0.3 arcsec of the star is relatively brighter at UV wavelengths (the central star dominates only at LONGER wavelengths). Real Time Justification ----------------------- None --- except, perhaps, that Eta Carinae would be a possible CVZ object. We frankly find it difficult to assess the pros and cons of this. For Cycle 5 we decided not to try for a CVZ, and there were no serious disadvantages to this decision so far as we know. None.
