These studies will be extended to 4 recently discovered Magnetic CVs using higher time resolution for the brighter sources and more extended observations of the more detached, longer period systems. The eclipse data reveal the position, size, and ionization conditions of the threading region and the pre-shock accretion stream. They also yield the sizes and relative luminosities of the white dwarf and far- UV hot spot. These data are particularly germane to the issue of inhomogeneous (blobby) accretion and the resulting effects on the hard X-ray/soft X-ray/cyclotron balance and shock geometries in these complex, naked CVs. Questions Observing_Description: Each observation will be comprised of the following: o Guide Star acquisition : 7.5 min. o Binary Acquisition : 9 min (or use offset from previous ACQ) o Rapid Mode through the remainder of the first orbit : 35 min. We have considerable experience with the FOS RAPID mode and intend to use Rapid Mode with and integrations of about 0.8 s to maximize the temporal and wavelength resolution with only slight impacts on throughput (94%--> 80% ). For UZ For and DP Leo, we have found two eclipse observations are crucial to reduce the effects of flicker noise and verify persistent eclipse structures. Thus, our orbit estimates are derived from the need for two eclipse observations per object. Typical count rates in the weakest channels, the far -UV channel and the C IV + He II channel, can be scaled by our UZ For observations and the relative brightnesses of the targets. UZ For (Mv=16.8) would give approximately 7.5 cnts/s post-COSTAR in the B3 aperture in each of these faint channels and 100 cnts/s and 500 cnts/s in the near-UV and white light channels respectively. All of the targets in Table 1 are as bright as UZ For. RXJ0515+0105 and RXJ2107.9-- 0518 are 4 times brighter. If the white dwarf and far-UV spot luminosities scale accordingly (they are comparable in the far-UV channel), the transition from white dwarf to white dwarf+hot spot will be from 15 cnt/s to 30 cnts/s during the egress of the spot in a two eclipse average. This is a 2Sigma rise for a 1 s egress. More complete modeling will set a 2 s upper limit on the time of egress. As in UZ For, the near-UV channel can also be used to limit the size of spot if the accretion stream is sufficiently eclipsed to eliminate flicker noise. Indeed, due to the dropoff in FOS efficiency, the near-UV channel can provide higher signal-to- noise but requires more exact modeling of the white dwarf eclipse for the subtraction. Real_Time_Justification: The major special requirement is phasing (PHASE) the RAPID mode observations with the eclipse ephemeris of the objects. To aid the planning operations: we can allow reduction of the 35m exposures to avoid filling the tape recorders, we use previous offsets to avoid acquiring during eclipse(!) and to have large buffers for the phasing of the next observations. Cycle1 experience indicates that the required data rates can be sustained for up to 35minutes per target. All the targets are accessible from major northern hemisphere observatories. It is our intent to obtain coeval spectropolarimetry of these targets using the CCD instrument described by Schmidt et al (1992), using the Steward 2.3 m on Kitt Peak or other facilities. RXJ0929.1-2404 has been confirmed as a mag CV this winter and we are obtaining an improved emphemeris. If observations must be shorten, we indicate in the comments how the center the exposures.
