Our results represent the first reported detections of objects the size of typical short- period comets in their native reservoir. In addition to demonstrating that such objects are indeed present in the Kuiper belt, we have proved that the HST/WFPC2 can be used to study these objects. Here we are proposing to push the observations to heretofore unprecedented levels by observing an ecliptic WPFC2 field, for a total integration time of 35 orbits, in order to advance both studies of the population size distribution, and the physical properties of cometary nuclei in the Kuiper belt. These observations will allow us to study, for the first time, the physical properties of objects with radii between ~ 2.5 and ~ 10 km in their native environment. With a single deep WFPC2 data set, we will be able to determine the size distribution and colors of these objects. We may even be able to determine the lightcurves for some of our brightest objects. In all, we estimate that we should detect and study ~ 200 new Kuiper belt objects. Questions Observing_Description: Our Cycle 4 observations have shown that Halley-sized objects do indeed populate the Kuiper belt, and that WFPC2/HST is capable of observing them. We are proposing to perform an ambitious set of WFPC2 observations in order to study the physical characteristics of these bodies. We propose a single set of WFPC2 observations that will collect a total of 35 orbits of integration time on one field in the Kuiper belt. Our objectives are to measure the size distribution and perhaps lightcurves of Kuiper belt objects with radii smaller than ~ 10, km. A 2.5 km Kuiper belt object at 30 au from the Sun, with an albedo of 0.04, will have a magnitude of V=30.0 when observed at quadrature. This object observed with a single 25hr exposure will have a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3.6 in the ``Wide V'' filter (F606W). Individual 20, min integrations (discussed below) summed to the 25 hr total will result in a slightly lower S/N of 2.7 due to increased readnoise. Although S/N=2 objects are not detectable as individuals, they are detectable as a group by using the statistical methods developed for our Cycle 4 observations (cf. Cochran et al. 1995). Thus, we chose a total integration time of 25 hours in order to provide us with a reasonable sampling of objects of this size. As discussed in the previous section, the known Kuiper belt objects tend to be red in color, similar to a K star. Because of this red color, the same 2.5 km object with a heliocentric distance of 30 au will have a S/N=3.7 in a single 25 hr integration through the ``Wide R'' filter (F702W). Thus, we could use either the F606W or the F702W filter without much difference in overall sensitivity. We choose to use both the F606W filter and F702W filters on alternate orbits since the signal/noise will be approximate the same in each and the use of both may yield important color information about these objects. Recall that in the first paper analyzing our Cycle 4 data, we found approximately 30 objects with drift rates in the range 0.73 to 1.16 arcsec/hr. (Such drift rates are consistent with, but not restricted to, the motion of objects near perihelion in 2:3 Neptune mean motion resonances with eccentricities from 0.1 to 0.3). By restricting our proposed ultra-deep survey to roughly the same range of drift rates, we anticipate discovering roughly 200 objects in the same relatively small range of distances. However, there is one major modification that is needed to accommodate the 25 hr integration time. In order to ensure that we can recover objects from exposure to exposure, all of the frames must be taken within a 3-5 day period. In this length of time, most of the objects will move an angular distance which is larger than the field of view. However, if we track the telescope so that the center of the field follows a hypothetical comet moving with a drift rate of 0.95 arcsec/hr, then the largest differential drift rate for our sample will be 0.22 arcsec/hr. This procedure has two important features: 1) the individual exposure time can be increased from 10 minutes to 20 minutes, since the light from the images in the proposed range of drift rates will remain on one pixel during each exposure and 2) over a one-week period a differential drift of 0.22 arcsec/hr with respect to the guiding center will produce a total differential motion of 37 arcsec, comfortably less than the 70 arcsec field of view. There should be no spacecraft roll between individual frames. We compute that 25 hours of total integration requires 35 orbits of the spacecraft. This number was arrived at by packing two exposures of either 20 or 21 minutes (first or subsequent orbit of the available 8 orbits outside the SAA avoidance) per orbit with 5 minutes of overhead for the two exposures. In addition, there is either 8 or 6 minutes for guide star acquisition or reacquisition each orbit. This completely fills the 53 minute visibility window for a planetary object of our chosen declination. In summary, we are proposing to observe a single ecliptic WPFC2 field for a total integration time of 25 hours in order to study cometary nuclei in the Kuiper belt. These observations will allow us to study, for the first time, the physical properties of objects with radii between ~2.5 and ~10, km in their native environment. With a single deep WFPC2 data set we will be able to determine the size distribution and colors of these objects.
