Section 4 Title: Orbits of Pre-Main Sequence Binaries Proposal_Category: GO Scientific_Category: COOL STARS Cycle: 6 Investigators PI_name: Michal Simon PI_Institution: State University of New York CoI_Name: Sherie Holfeltz CoI_Institution: Space Telescope Science Institute Contact: N CoI_Name: Laurence Taff CoI_Institution: Johns Hopkins University Contact: N Abstract: Our goal is to measure the masses of low mass pre-main sequence stars dynamically. This is important because there are still no low mass young stars with reliably known masses. We have begun this program by using the FGS to map the orbits of close separation young star binaries in Taurus. In order to measure the orbits of the systems with the smallest separations, and hence those uniquely observable by the HST and having the shortest periods, we propose to continue the observations in Taurus and also to extend the program to 3 systems in Ophiuchus. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: This program requires the FGS operating in Transfer Function Mode. We will use the PUPIL filter to take advantage of the red spectra of the stars and the S20 response of the FGS photomultipliers, and the 2/3 aperture stop to achieve the best signal-to-noise ratio. Since the binaries are expected to have orbital periods of a few years, we request two FGS observations per year, at the greatest interval set by guide star availability (see next section). We calculate the exposure time to reach adequate S/N for a V=17 mag secondary and need an FGS scan length of 1.5'' per axis to be certain to include the entire system. To satisfy these constraints we require 10 Transfer Function mode scans at 180 seconds/scan. Thus each observation will require an exposure of 1800 sec. Previous experience with the Taurus objects indicates that each observation can be fitted into one orbit conveniently. Real_Time_Justification: Our targets are associated with the Taurus and Ophiuchus dark clouds. Guide star availability could therefore be a problem. Careful analysis of the sources in Taurus by Denise Taylor has already identified suitable times for their observation. We will work with her to identify similar windows of observability for the three new sources in Ophiuchus. Calibration_Justification: Additional_Comments: Fixed_Targets !
