Free format text (please update) The Hyades Cluster, owing to its nearness, richness, and young age, occupies a pivotal role in studies of star formation and stellar populations, and in the calibration of the Galactic and cosmic distance scales. Among open and critical problems bearing upon this role are the frequency of binaries particularly among faint Hyades members, and the conformance of Hyads to the properties and their relationships (e.g. mass- luminosity) determined for field stars. A search with Hubble Space Telescope Fine Guidance Sensor 3 in TRANS mode of 36 probable Hyades cluster members in the magnitude range V=10-- 15 has yielded nine certain binary detections. Second observations have shown evidence for rapid orbital motion in two pairs (VA43 and VA351), indicating periods of less than three years. We propose to carry out astrometry of these faint Hyades binaries with FGS in a combination of POS and TRANS modes. Such new observations, combined with FGS astrometry already in hand, and with orbital radial velocity measures, will yield masses and absolute magnitudes of these low- luminosity Hyades members independent of the kinematic mean cluster distance and with an accuracy of 5 percent or better. The mass of VA43B will be among the lowest stellar masses reliably determined. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will observe the two binary targets in POS and TRANS modes and nearby reference stars only in POS mode 6 times each during Cycle 6. The spacing of the observations will aim mostly at uniform coverage of the binary orbital arcs, since parallax factors are not of primary concern. Each POS-mode observation set will consist of a sequence of fine-lock measurements of the primary target, a drift-check star, reference stars, the primary target, the drift-check star, reference stars, and repeats as time permits. During each observation sequence we will also obtain one set of TRANS mode observations of the binary target. Each full sequence of POS and TRANS observations will fit into one orbit. A total of 12 orbits will thus be required to carry out the proposed observations of both targets. Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: !
