Free format text (please update) We propose to use the WFPC2 pyramid as a coronagraph to detect circumstellar material about five nearby stars. Two orbits will be devoted to each target. Each target star will be acquired in PC1. The first orbit will be used for an INTACQ to position the core of the stellar PSF off the edge of PC1 in WF2 followed by 4 thirty second F850LP observations, while the second orbit will be used to image the expected circumstellar disk material in PC1. Four ten minute exposures with the F555W filter will be obtained, reaching a limiting magnitude V~26. This imaging technique is only possible with the WFPC2 onboard HST. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We propose high resolution PC1 observations with the F555W and F850LP filters of the selected targets. The stellar PSF for each target star will be positioned off the edge of PC1, isolating the effects of overexposure (saturation and blooming) to adjacent CCD frame WF2. A total of 4 ten minute exposures with the F555W filter and 4 thirty second exposures with the F850LP filter will be obtained for each target. A real-time acquisition will be necessary to position the core of the stellar PSF in CCD frame WF2. We list the observational properties of the selected targets. First orbit: Interactive Acquisition (INT ACQ) one short (~0.7 sec) exposure with F343N will be sent to the ground, and target star centroid. Offsets will be calculated to position the target off the edge of PC1 into WF2, at X=-19.5",Y=0.0" from center of PC1. Slews sent up to spacecraft. Decision time should be shorten to allow FOUR 30 second F850LP filter observations following the INT ACQ and to fill the first orbit. The exposure line for "Exposure_Number: 5" has been commented out due to RPS2 does not allow the user to shorten the decision exposure time. If possible, the overhead for the fourth 30 sec exposure should be hidden in earth occultation. The four 30 sec F850LP exposures will be grouped into pairs of observations, with the second pair dithered by +0.25,+0.25 arcseconds. Second orbit: Two 20 minute exposures (CR-SLPIT, four 600 sec exposures) with F555W. Real_Time_Justification: Two requirements are necessary to image successfully the outer regions of a circumstellar disk about a nearby star: 1) positioning of each star ~2" off the edge of PC1, and 2) CLOCKS should be on. A real-time acquisition (INTACQ) is required to correctly position the core of the stellar PSFs on the same pixel in the WF2 frame. Positioning in the CCD frame is critical such that there are no overexposure effect in PC1 (in which a portion of a circumstellar disk is to be imaged). Unlike WFPC1, WFPC2 CCDs are clocked in Multi-Phased Pinning (MPP) mode, greatly reducing the effects of charge migration which can lead to column bleeding. This is an added advantage that was not available with WFPC1. From analysis of our cycle 5 images of Beta Pictoris obtained during the first set of INTACQs, it was possible to position the core of the PSF for Alpha & Beta Pic within the same WF4 pixel. We discovered by trail-and-error that subpixel shifting of the Alpha Pic image to match the Beta Pic image was sufficient, and necessary, for subtracting out most of the diffraction spikes.
