Abstract: ! Free format text (please update)
This proposal seeks HST observations to complete a program
begun in Cycle 5. In particular, we need 2 orbits to complete
FGS observations to get the parallaxes of both the visible
objects in this probable binary. HD 98800 is a nearby K star
(possibly a dwarf at about 12 pc or maybe a pre-main sequence
star at 30 to 35 pc) that is extraordinary because at least
10\ reradiated in the infrared. Basic geometry tells us that
that material must form a very thick disk, yet such disks
collapse very quickly. How then is the disk's thickness
maintained? What kind of star is HD 98800? More precisely,
what kind of stars are HD 98800, for there are, in fact, two
visible objects, and each of these is a spectroscopic binary.
How did this system, which is probably very young, come to be
    in the immediate solar neighborhood?

Questions ! Free format text (please update)

     Observing_Description:
FGS Observations: To determine the parallaxes of the two
visible objects we need to use the FGSs in POS mode. Fritz
Benedict is our expert in this area and he has determined
that there are 6 reference objects nearby that are brighter
than V=16. We will need three visits 6 months apart of two
orbits each. The first two visits are to be done in Cycle 5,
and it is the third that is requested in this proposal. This
should provide one milliarcsec precision for the parallaxes.
