Abstract IRAS 09104+4109 is one of the most luminous objects discovered in the IRAS survey, and has been identified with a large cD galaxy in a cluster at a redshift of z=0.442. The cD galaxy is in the center of a massive cooling flow. The nuclear spectrum of IRAS 09104+4109 indicates the presence of a dust enshrouded quasar, yet the apparent ionizing flux of the AGN falls short of that required to produce the infrared luminosity by a large factor. Within the extended stellar envelope of the cD, there are a number of faint, yet intrinsically luminous knots. These may be the nuclei of galaxies recently stripped by their interaction with the cD galaxy, possibly providing much of the dust and gas associated with the luminous infrared source. We propose to use the WFPC2 to observe IRAS 09104+4109 in the F622W, F814W and LRF7220Angstrom\ filters. With these observations we will accurately measure the colors of the luminous knots and search for evidence of the interactions responsible for stripping their galactic disks. We will also probe the core of the cD galaxy on a scale of <1 kpc and look for both a highly reddened nucleus and a ``cone" of emission line gas which may mark the polar axis of an obscuring torus. Finally, these data will be used to search for faint, unresolved, blue objects in the halo of IRAS 09104+4109 which may be proto-globular clusters formed as a result of the interactions or out of the cooling flow itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Our observing time request is for WFPC2 observations of IRAS 09104+4109 in the three filters F622W and F814W and the ramp filter centered at 7220Angstrom . The groundbased spectrum of Kleinmann et al. 1988 was taken with a large beam nucleus in a large aperture, but spatially resolved spectroscopy of this source (Crawford, private communication) shows that the line emitting region is dominated by an unresolved nuclear source so that the line contamination should be negligible off the nucleus (even along the OIII jet the flux of OIII in the 814W filter is <10 percent). total integration times were estimated using the WFPC2 exposure time calculator (Birretta, 1995) and were based on the observed large aperture magnitudes from K88 and Soifer, et al. 1995, and the fraction of the total flux within the central unresolved nucleus from Soifer, et al., and were calculated for the average surface brightness in the extended emission. The times were selected to achieve a S/N of 2.5/pixel on the PC chip for the broad filter observations, and a S/N of 4/pixel on the WF chip for the linear ramp filter (to approximate the linear ramp filter the closest narrowband filter was used for the calculation, and the resulting integration time scaled by the square of the relative filter transmissions in the two bandpasses). For the estimate of the time for the OIII image, the extended OIII flux was assumed to be of uniform surface brightness over a 5'' * 1 '' region Kleinmann et al. 1988. These integration times listed below were converted to orbits using the instructions in the proposal preparation guide.
