Rodriguez-Pascual CoI_Institution: ESA IUE Observatory Contact: Abstract: Observations with HST of the intrinsic EUV spectrum of the up to now unique high-redshift QSO HS 1700+6416 have opened a new field of research: quantitative spectroscopy of high ionization quasar absorption line systems with ~ 40 new EUV lines from ions like OII-OV, NIII, NIV, SIII-SV, NeIII-NeVII offers the possibility to determine abundances and to measure the shape and intensity of the ionizing UV background. , While most UV wavelengths have been covered in previous cycles with the FOS and the repaired GHRS with reasonable S/N, there is a gap between 1450 and 1750Angstrom where available spectra have too low S/N for quantitative work. , In this wavelength range we see in particular Ne lines (NeIII 488, NeIV 541/43, NeV 568, NeV 480, NeVI 433, 558, NeVII 465) in redshift systems z=1.725, 1.8465, 2.1678, 2.308, 2.315, 2.433, 2.439, 2.579. , We propose to take a GHRS G140L (LSA) and FOS G190H spectrum covering the range 1450 to 1750Angstrom at a S/N > 20 for most of the range useful for quantitative work. , Cycle 6 offers the last chance to cover that important range in HS 1700, since STIS has a sensitivity gap in that range and cannot be used for that purpose. Questions Observing_Description: HS 1700+6416 is an ideal CVZ target and the long integration needed should be done during the CVZ phases. , The optimum strategy to cover the wavelength range 1450 to 1750Angstrom uses the GHRS G140L (LSA) for 1450 to 1600 and the FOS G190H for the range 1600 to 1750 (where the FOS is much more sensitive than the GHRS). , With a flux of 1.5cdot10^-15 at 1600Angstrom (according to our GHRS data from June 1994), an integration time of 560 min. is needed to attain a S/N >= 15 for Lambda<=1600Angstrom with the GHRS (7 orbits in the CVZ). The FOS G190H requires 415 min. for a S/N >=20 for Lambda>=1600Angstrom (5 orbits CVZ). , This strategy ensures with a minimum of observing time a S/N >20 over the region 1450-1750, except 1500-1600 with S/N=15. , Altogether 12 orbits are required. Real_Time_Justification: We suggest CVZ observations which enhance the efficiency nearly by a factor of 2 due to the long integration times. Groundbased high-resolution spectroscopy of HS 1700+6416 was done with the 4m WHT on La Palma and with the Keck 10m telescope. The last gap in our high resolution optical spectra was filled this year by P. Rodriguez et al. who succeeded in getting spectra in the range 3200 to 3800Angstrom with the WHT.
