Abstract We propose to observe spectroscopically both components of the new double QSO HS 1216+5032 (z=1.43, d=9.1") with the FOS in high resolution in the range 2200 to 3270Angstrom with the aim to measure transverse dimensions of Ly-alpha forest clouds in the in this respect unexplored redshift range z=0.8 to 1.4 for which this QSO pair is an excellent target with a linear separation of 80 h_50^ -1 kpc. This double QSO recently discovered by the Hamburg survey is particularly well suited for a Ly- alpha forest study since it samples Ly-alpha clouds on a scale slightly smaller than the expected characteristic cloud sizes. Identification and spectroscopy of possible parent galaxies at z~1 from the ground combined with FOS data will yield 2- dimensional information on Ly-alpha clouds for the first time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6432( 6) - 03/13/96 07:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to take high-resolution spectra of both components with the FOS G270H. With an estimated flux >= 10^-15 erg/cm^2/s/Angstrom at 2400Angstrom for component A a S/N>=20 is reached in 22 min for Lambda>2400Angstrom (1 orbit). , Component B is about a factor of 6 to 7 fainter than A which requires about 140 min. exposure time or 4 orbits. Altogether 5 orbits are necessary to cover both objects with a S/N>=20 for Lambda>2400Angstrom. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Medium resolution spectroscopy with DeltaLambda~2Angstrom covering the optical from 3300 to 6700Angstrom will be conducted with the Calar Alto 3.5m telescope (accepted for March 96). Deep imaging and spectroscopy of the QSO environment will be applied for at the CFHT 4m telescope for spring 96 (J. Bergeron).
