Abstract R136 is the prototype ``super star cluster'', the result of an intense star- formation event. Similarly extreme objects have now been recognized in more distant galaxies, and may in fact be the young analogs of globular clusters. Located in the LMC, R136 is the only such young, compact, luminous star cluster that can be studied in sufficent detail for a direct determination of its stellar content, and thus represents our best opportunity to examine the star formation process in such events. Therefore, we are proposing to obtain the optical spectra of roughly 100 of the most luminous stars in R136 necessary to accurately place them on an HR diagram and thus infer their masses and ages from evolutionary tracks. This will directly tell us the initial mass function of the massive stars in this extreme object, and provide the chronology of star formation within the cluster. The comparison with the IMF's determined for the same mass range in ``normal" OB associations and clusters, as well as field stars, will reveal whether the star formation process depends on the concentration of the star-forming region. The ages and age spread of the massive stars, when compared to the ages of intermediate mass stars on pre-main sequence tracks, will show how star formation proceeded within the region. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We plan to observe the 80-90 stars found by the PC images to be blue (with V_o<14.5 or V<15.8), corresponding to a 20 Mo ZAMS star (Bolometric mag=-7 or M_V= -4.5) plus a few additional slightly fainter members (15.850 (per 3A spectral resolution element), necessitated by the weakness of many of the spectral classification lines; this SNR is a bare minimum, and we will aim for a SNR of 80 for an ``average" star of V=14.6 (exposure time 1200s). Thus, 90 stars will require 30.0 hrs of actual intregration, with an addition 6 min per object overhead for read-down (9 hrs).This project would be impractical if we also had to allow for normal acquisition for each object. However, we can drastically reduce this time by carefully doing a full centering procedure on a nearby isolated star and then observing our targets by blind offsetting from target to target; the overhead for these short slews are typically 30s (x90=0.7hrs). This is possible since we have precise relative coordinates from the WFPC2 PC image of R136, and, given the crowding within the R136 cluster, blind offsetting is the preferred approch in any event. Specifically we plan to allow for a careful centering of an offset star lasting 56 min (A+B+C1+F1+D3), followed by a series of blind offsets. We plan to retweak (D3) on this offset star every two orbits. In addition, we gain nearly a factor of two in efficiency due to the fortuitous fact that the R136 cluster lies is accessible in a CVZ for 31 orbits during Cycle 6. Real Time Justification ----------------------- As detailed above we are relying on the fact that the R136 cluster lies within a CVZ in order to allow us to do the large number of stars (90) required for this proposal. Our requirements just fits within the total CVZ time available at this position. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- We have constructed this revised Phase II submission after many exchanges with Jeffrey Hayes and Giselle Sleiman. All science observations will be obtained via blind-offsetting into the 0.3" round aperture. We have measured offsets from WFPC2 PC image, and checked these offsets with two WFPC1 PC exposures of the cluster; we are confident that our offsets are good to +/- 0.01". Our exposure times were calculated to achieve a SNR of 50 for our faintest stars (V=16.2) and a SNR of 80 for a "typical" (V=14.6) star. There are exactly two CVZ periods: 12Nov - 13Nov and 4Jan - 5Jan according to the RPS2 software Following instructions from Jeff Hayes, we have distributed our 30 orbits allocation as follows. The first CVZ opporunity (12 Nov - 13 Nov) Visit 1 (7 orbits) + Visit 2 (8 orbits) The seconc CVZ opportunity (4J an - 5 Jan): Visit 3 (7 orbits) and Visit 8 (8 orbits). We realize that exactly how the SAA will impact us is still a bit uncertain, and we have included additional exposures at the end of visit that are commented out in the event that a less costly way of reacquisition is found. During each visit, we do a single peak-up on the offset star every few orbits.
