Free format text (please update) This is a continuation proposal from cycle 5. Our aim is to image the optical jet emanating from the young stellar object L1551 IRS5 over a period of three cycles. Using two narrow band filters sensitive to high- and low-excitation shocks respectively, we aim to study the time evolution of small scale structures within this object. Ground based observations have already detected the time scale for evolution of this object. HST is going to provide the level of detail necessary for a direct comparison with (existing) hydrodynamical models. Our data will resolve the smallest features observed (optically) so far in an astrophysical jet, and also detect their time evolution. This proposal received already time in cycle 5 with 4 orbits. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will obtain 2 deep images in each of HAlpha and SII in cycle 6. One orbit will be dedicated to each of the filters. Although relative astrometry of the movements of the knots in the jet is the main purpose of this proposal, the orientation of the HST sould be such that the few reference stars available within the field of view fall onto the wide field part of the camera thus allowing also absolute astrometry.
