Free format text (please update) This proposal represents the culmination of our systematic and definitive study, using HST observations, of a large sample of PNs at known distance in the Magellanic Clouds. Over the past five cycles, images have been obtained for a total of 30 objects (GO+GTO) and UV spectroscopy will finally be obtained for some 24 PN. The images give the spatial structures, sizes, ionised masses, and dynamical ages of the PNs. In conjunction with FOS spectrophotometry in the range 1150-- 4800 Angstrom and our ground-based data, we have shown that we can further derive the effective temperature, luminosity, and core mass for the PN central stars, and also determine the nebular abundances of all elements involved in dredge-up processes. For no other sample of PN can we achieve such a detailed understanding of the evolution of both the PN central star and of its nebular shell; we have even been able to separate the H-burning from He-burning PN, and have found clear evidence of mass-dependent dredge-up. In Cycle 6 we propose to complete this ambitious program by observing a further 15 objects chosen to complement our previously- observed sample, and ensure complete coverage of the H-R diagram. Large gains in observing efficiency are obtained by executing the program during CVZ periods. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: In Cycle 6 we propose to obtain WFPC2 images in the H Alpha and O III lines, and to complete our FOS UV spectrophotometry with a further sample of 15 PNs of low reddening for which we already have ground-based spectrophotometry, fluxes, densities, and expansion velocities. This will increase our total sample from 24 to 39, and provide statistically-significant groups of objects in each luminosity, excitation or mass bin. We have selected only LMC PN to ensure that this objective is met. We estimate these to have physical sizes in the range 0.3 -- 1.0 arcsec ; continuum fluxes at 1600Angstrom\ of 6 * 10^-16 to 10^-14 erg/cm^2/s; at 3200Angstrom\ of 5 * 10^-16 to 3 * 10^-15 erg/cm^2/s; surface brightness in the O IIIf\ 5007 Angstrom line of 3 * 10^-13 to 2 * 10^-11 erg/cm^2/arcsec^2/s; and in H Alpha from 10^-13 to 9 * 10^-12 in these same units. The proposed imaging program would provide high quality images(mean S/N = 30 /pixel) in both the O III line and the H Alpha line, which will allow us to investigate the nebular morphology, and to derive size, mass, and dynamical age. We also propose FOS/BL UV spectrophotometry in the range 1150-- 4800 Angstrom using the G130H, G190H, G270H and G400H gratings, and the 0.86 arcsec circular aperture. The G400H disperser gives overlap with the ground-based spectrophotometry for normalisation purposes. In the UV, we have configured our program to achieve a S/N of 20--50 per 50 Angstrom in the nebular+stellar continuum. This ensures a good detection of the central star against its nebular continuum, even when the stellar flux is only 10 percent of the nebular continuum. This also provides uniform, high quality, high dynamic range nebular emission line spectra. These data will be combined with our ground-based data of comparable quality covering the wavelength range 3200--8000 Angstrom (Meatheringham & Dopita 1991a, b). In the coming observing season, we intend to extend these data to 9800 Angstrom. In the decade of frequency covered by these observations, we see emission lines of the astrophysically important elements such as He, C, N, O, Si and S over the full range of ionisation stages present. For this reason, and also because the allowable nebular models are strongly constrained by the density sensitive line ratios and by the HST imaging results, we have found that, in all cases so far modelled, we can derive chemical abundances of individual elements accurate to within 10--15 percent. Exposure times have been calculated for each object on the basis of the computed nebular continuum fluxes, at 1600 Angstrom and at 3200 Angstrom and from the estimated mean surface brightness in the two emission lines. For the imaging program, the counts/PC pixel/sec, C, are given in terms of the line surface brightness, S (erg/cm^2/arcsec^2/s), by: log C = log S + beginarrayll 12.028 & (F502N), 12.424 & (F656N) endarray and for the spectroscopy program the counts/diode are given by: log C = log F(1600) + beginarrayll 13.21 & (G130H) , 13.45 & (G190H) endarray and: log C = log F(3200) + beginarrayll 14.63 & (G270H) , 14.80 & (G400H) endarray where F(1600) and F(3200) are the continuum fluxes in the 0.86 arcsec aperture at 1600 Angstrom and 3200 Angstrom respectively. These formulae are estimated from the handbooks, and provide the basis of our program time estimates summarised in special requirements below. Real_Time_Justification: All except two objects in the proposed sample lie in the range 0.3-0.8 arcsec in diameter. For the FOS spectrophotometry to be used as input to photoionization- modelling codes, all the grating observations need to be obtained contiguously, and without interruption, so that the same part of any PN is observed through the 0.86 arcsec circular aperture for each grating. With this constraint, all the objects need to be scheduled within the continuous viewing zone (CVZ). Because of restrictions in formatting the TeX file it has not been possible to specify the exact number of orbits required for observations in CVZ. The table below shows the true total observation times for each object, and the CVZ information for the sample, taken from Appendix F of the Phase I proposal instructions.
