Date: Thu Apr 18 16:53:14 EDT 1996 Proposal_Information Title: The Early Onset of Asymmetric Outflow During the Planetary Nebula Formation Process Proposal_Category: SNAP Scientific_Category: INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM Cycle: 6 Investigators PI_Name: Susan Trammell PI_Institution: University of Chicago CoI_Name: Robert Goodrich CoI_Institution: Space Telescope Science Institute Contact: Abstract: We propose to study early mass loss in the planetary nebula (PN) formation process using the high resolution imaging capabilities of HST. While tremendous progress has been made in understanding the late stages of PN formation, the details of the earliest phases of this metamorphosis are still vague. A knowledge of the characteristics of the mass loss occurring as a star leaves the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) is crucial to a complete picture of the PN development, since early mass loss is thought to determine the final shape of an object by confining the faster winds that occur later in the formation process. Unfortunately, there is little observational evidence that probes the distribution of this early ejecta. Is the final morphology of a PN imprinted at early times as suggested by the formation models? Fully developed PNe display a variety of morphologies ranging from round to bipolar. Based on the formation models we might expect material ejected early in the development of a PN to also exhibit a range of morphologies. Is this what we observe? We will directly address these questions by obtaining PC2 images of a sample of AGB/post-AGB stars. We have shown, using polarimetry, that the stars in this sample possess extended scattering envelopes that are spatially unresolved from the ground, but can be resolved using HST. These observations will reveal the morphology of the ejecta in the first stages of the PN formation process, thus testing the validity of the current models of PN formation. Questions Observing_Description: We will obtain V and R band Planetary Camera observations for all 11 AGB/post-AGB stars. In addition, for sources that are bright enough in the blue will we obtain B band images. In a few cases, we will obtain images through narrow-band filters centered on emission lines that are thought to be formed in the extended shells around these stars (e.g. Na I D for QY Sge). We will use guide stars and fine lock tracking for these observations since we a concerned with obtaining the highest possible spatial resolution. We request the standard 12 month proprietary period for the data obtained for this project. The exposures will be short, designed to avoid saturation of the star, while providing a large enough signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) to detect the extended scattering envelopes around these stars. We will use a the gain of 14 e- per DN for these observations which gives a digital full well depth of 53,000 e-. We want to maximize the exposure time without saturating the stellar core. This means that the number of electrons collected in the peak pixel of the stellar point-spread function must be <= 53,000. Equation 6.1 in the WFPC2 Handbook gives the number of electrons, N_e, collected from a point source of apparent magnitude, V, in a given exposure time. Ne is the number of counts contained in the entire point-spread function (PSF). For our exposure time calculations we need to know the fraction, X, of the total counts contained in the peak pixel of the PSF. X can be estimated from the model PSF's given in Table 5.1 (assuming that the star is near the center of a pixel). The maximum exposure time is then given by t = (53,000 x X)/((2.5x10^11) x QT x 10^(-0.4(V + AB))) where QT is the dimensionless efficiency. The QT integrals for each filter are given in Table 6.2 and the V+AB values for various targets were calculated using the equation for the Oke system magnitude given in section 6 of the Handbook and values for the flux taken from ground-based spectroscopy. We can obtain images through all of the the passbands (including overhead time) for a given target in less than or equal to one orbit, making these objects excellent candidates for a snapshot program. RW LMi is the objects requiring the longest exposure times of all 11 sources. Given the exposure times, we need to calculate the S/N in the reflection nebula surrounding the star. Since we know the polarization of each object, we can put a lower limit on how much of the observed flux is scattered by the extended shell. We obtain a minimum scattered flux, F_s, by simply taking F_s = P x Ne where N_e is the count rate integrated over the PSF. Assuming that the scattered light falls into 8 x 8 pixels on the CCD (corresponding to our size estimate of 0.4"), we can estimate the S/N per pixel of the extended nebula. In all cases, the observation of a significant polarization (P > 1%) immediately implies adequate S/N in the extended reflection nebula, assuming HST resolves this region. Noise estimates include shot noise for the stars, readout noise, sky noise, dark current, and quantization noise, per the Handbook. Note that the PSF for the stellar image drops to < 1% three pixels distant from the stellar core, so that at the distances we expect to see the reflection nebulae, (> 5 pixels from the core) noise from the PSF will not be a significant factor. Exposure time estimates for the narrow-band images are based on the emission line fluxes from our spectropolarimetry. We have calculated the number of electrons expected to be recorded by the Planetary Camera CCD. Based on these expected collection rates and the total system throughput from the figures in section 8.2 of the WFPC2 Handbook, we have estimated exposure times for the appropriate narrow-band filters. Real_Time_Justification: None. We have already obtained optical spectropolarimetry for all of the targets.
