Free format text (please update) We propose to obtain WFPC2 SNAPSHOT observations of an unique sample of radio-loud IRAS galaxies to investigate the role of galaxy mergers and starbursts in the triggering or fuelling of radio AGN. Ground-based observations have shown that our sample contains a significant class of compact objects which are intermediate between ultraluminous starburst galaxies and quasars in their luminosities and spectroscopic properties. These post-starburst AGN (PSAGN) are characterized by both strong Balmer absorption lines and high-ionization emission lines. Therefore this sample is well suited to studying the elusive missing link between starburst galaxies and AGN. The superior spatial resolution of HST will be used to discern high surface brightness structures in the PSAGN to determine the incidence, scale sizes, morphologies and luminosities of double galaxy nuclei, `hotspot' HII regions in stellar bars, circumnuclear disks, rings, and tidal arms. The images also should reveal any optical features associated with extended radio source components such as aligned optical knots or jets. The snapshot data will become publicly available immediately. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: Our primary objective is the detection of compact high surface brightness features near radio-loud AGN in IRAS galaxies. Ground-based CCD images in R have shown that some structure can be detected, even though these objects are dust -rich and extinction may obscure some of features. The spectral energy distributions for most of our objects, which are mostly at moderate redshifts (z<0.5), are relatively flat in the red. We therefore choose the most efficient filter (F702W) and will target all objects on PC1 for maximum spatial resolution. Each observation will be split into two exposures to aid in the process of CR removal. The observations will be made using gyros; a moderate amount (~ 2 pixels) of gyro drift in each ~7 minute frame is acceptable. Since the mean pointing error on gyros is about 15", we expect that some of the targets may fall on a WFC chip or will be outside the field of view. 15 minute integrations using the planetary camera will allow us to detect point sources down to 24.5 magnitudes with F702W. In general, the nuclei of these galaxies will be compact and bright at long optical wavelengths (15~lt I ~lt19) and thus short exposures using the HST should be sufficient to detect most of the double nuclei and other compact structures down to separations much less than a 100 pc -- well below the nearest separations detectable using ground-based imaging. Real_Time_Justification: We are engaged in a ground-based program using our sample to investigate the evolutionary connection between luminous IRAS galaxies and radio loud AGN with a variety of techniques. These include near-infrared imaging to probe the obscured central regions and determine the dependence of the morphologies seen at R- and I-band on extinction (Lick), spectropolarimetry to search for polarized, scattered light from hidden AGN (Lick), and spectroscopy of faint identifications to search for luminous high redshift IRAS galaxies and quasars (Keck). We are also pursuing an extensive program of mm-line observations to determine the extents and luminosities of the molecular gas reservoirs in these objects (NRAO 12m, JCMT). High resolution VLA radio continuum observations are in hand for a direct comparison with the HST observations as they come available. Calibration_Justification: !
