Free format text (please update) We propose to obtain F218W WFPC images of a well defined sample of nearby galaxies with face-on circumnuclear starburst rings, and covering different levels of activity from pure starbursts to Seyfert 1 (AGNs). These high resolution images will allow to generate for the first time an homogeneous database with the UV properties of about 60 individual circumnuclear star-forming knots. The use of the database will allow for the first time a direct and quantitative determination of basic ultraviolet properties of individual nuclear/circumnuclear star-forming knots, and of the entire starburst ring, such as: (a) their size and structure, (b) their UV luminosity function and, (c) their contribution to the UV energy output in composite AGN+starburst galaxies. The database will help in our understanding of high redshift blue galaxies, thought to be star-forming galaxies, where the flux detected in optical filters corresponds to flux emitted at UV (1500-3000Angstrom) rest frame wavelengths. The requested UV images will be combined with ROSAT/HRI images to characterize for the first time the high energy end, i.e. UV to soft X-rays, of circumnuclear starburst rings. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We propose to obtain images of a sample of 20 nearby spiral galaxies with face-on circumnuclear starburst rings of about 10'' to 15'' in diameter. The sample covers a range of nuclear activity from pure starbursts to LINER+HII, Sy2+HII, and Sy1+HII. Each galaxy consists of three to five high surface brightness independent star-forming knots, judging from ground-based V and/or HAlpha images. The UV filter has been selected to be sensitive to the presence of unobscured UV-luminous clusters of recently formed hot massive stars. Due to the degradation of the WFPC2 UV throughput, we require to obtain the images within few days after the monthly decontamination. Our proposed images would be obtained as a SNAPSHOT survey with WFPC2, using the F218W band filter, placing each target in the center of WF3. Since we are requesting 20 minutes exposures, we request the observations to be taken with Fine Lock guiding. Exposure Time - In the following we assume a WFPC2 pixel of 0.1'', and a WFPC2 readout noise (RN) of 5 electrons per pixel. The 20 minutes of integration time will be equally divided in two exposures of 10 minutes each, utilizing CR-SPLIT. We consider that each individual circumnuclear star-forming knot has on average a size of about 100 parsecs, i.e. a projected size of 1'' at a distance of 20 Mpc. We also consider that the brightest circumnuclear star-forming regions in our sample galaxies are similar to those detected in NGC 1068. Using the observed ultraviolet fluxes of the NGC 1068 circumnuclear star-forming regions (Bruhweiler et al. 1991, ApJ 379, 596), each of the individual brightest star-forming knots in our sample galaxies is assumed to have an observed UV flux of about 1.0 * 10^-14 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1. Assuming that the spectrum of Vega defines the zero point of the UV filter (F218W: 4.50 * 10^-9 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1) the above mentioned UV flux corresponds to a surface brightness of ~ 20 mag per pixel. The signal (S) and noise (N) per pixel after N_exp exposures of T seconds of integration each, (utilizing CR- SPLIT) is given by: S= 2.5 * 10^11 * N_exp * T * (QT) * 10^-0.4(Mu/pix) N= (2.5 * 10^11 * N_exp * T * (QT) * 10^-0.4(Mu/pix) + N * RN^2)^1/2, where RN is the readout noise and (QT)= 0.00057. The requested integration time will allow to investigate not only the structure of the brightest star-forming knots but also to detect fainter knots with a signal-to-noise of ~ 5-10. Real_Time_Justification: None Four of the galaxies in the sample (plus NGC 1068 and NGC 2903) have already been observed with the ROSAT high resolution imager (HRI) by members of our team or others. We plan to request ROSAT/HRI observations for the rest of the sample. The combination of ROSAT/HRI and HST images will allow to investigate for the first time the UV and soft X-ray properties of circumnuclear star-forming regions. The diameter of the circumnuclear rings in the sample galaxies (10'' to 15'') are such to allow resolving the nuclear and circumnuclear regions in the HRI images. Broad- and narrow- band images for most of the galaxies in the sample have already been obtained by our team, allowing for the comparison (at low resolution) with the UV mapping provided by HST.
