The survey will complement Illingworth's snapshot study of later Hubble types and provide a data base for the investigation of correlations of properties such as dust, metallicity, and colors with nuclear structure. Earlier work with the HST on the nuclear morphology of early-type galaxies has revealed that there is a clear dichotomy amongst these objects. They either have a shallow (but non-zero) surface brightness cusp, or their surface brightness continues to rise as a power-law all the way into the center, without the sign of a clear break-radius. The former we will denote as core-galaxies, while the latter will be called power-law galaxies. A number of the power-law galaxies were found to harbor small, bright, stellar disks in their nuclei. This large survey of early type galaxies will allow the investigation of the frequency of these nuclear disks. We will also investigate the relation between central cusp steepness and other parameters such as total magnitude, nuclear morphology and other galactic phenomena. Questions Observing_Description: SUMMARY: We will take snap shots of 130 early type galaxies with the WFPC2. We will use the F702W filter, which has optimum sensitivity for E/S0 galaxies and is red enough to minimize the effect of dust on the observed morphologies. We will position the galaxy nucleus on the PC1 CCD in order to obtain maximum spatial resolution. SAMPLE SELECTION: The sample was compiled from the Lyon Extragalactic Database (LEDA), and is limited to early type galaxies with radial velocities less than 3400 km/s, an aboslute V-band magnitude less than -18.5, and absolute galactic latitude exceeding 20 degrees (to minimize the effects of galactic extinction). Obvious duplicates (WFPC2) were discarded from the sample. The positions of the targets were measured from the GASP system, and compared to the positions in the catalogues. In a few cases, the differences exceeded 10 arcsec. Some of those where found to be merging systems and the coordinates of the center of the system where taken. Others, for which no explanation for the positional error could be found, were removed from the sample. OBSERVING STRATEGY: Previous, post-COSTAR HST observations of ellipticals have shown that the power-law galaxies have typically a central surface brightness in V of Mu_V=14.5, whereas the core-galaxies typically have Mu_V= 16.5 in the center. With the F702W filter this will yield approximately 50 ct/s/pixel for the power-law galaxies and 6 ct/s/pixel for the core-galaxies. Using exposure times of 1000s in total with the ATD-GAIN=15 setting, this will yield a total of 3300 and 400 ADU for the power-law and core galaxies respectively. We will CR-SPLIT the exposures in a 300s and a 700s exposure. This will both ensure easy removal of cosmic rays during the reduction of the data, as well as ensure against saturation in the presence of bright nuclear point sources.
