The aim of the project is to build a reference UV Atlas of galaxies whose optical images are well known, with the highest possible degree of information, covering all the morphological types and luminosity classes. The F300W passband is significantly bluer than the Johnson U, its transmission curve is not limited by the atmospheric cut-off, and offers adequate throughput for this project. The sample is extracted from the Revised Shapley-Ames Catalog and includes 150 galaxies with redshift distribution centered around ~ 1500 km/sec and FWHM~ 500 km/s. At these redshifts the field-of-view of WFPC2 covers ~ 23 Kpc, or approximately the Holmberg diameter of a large spiral galaxy. We have designed this project to be a service to the community and we will make the data publicly available immediately after the necessary reduction. No systematic imaging of local galaxies at wavelengths bluer than the B band are currently available and the general properties of galaxies of the various Hubble types at UV wavelenghts are essentially unknown. Still, this information is crucial for a variety of studies, which include star-formation activity and evolution, nuclear activity, the physics of the ISM, the evolution of galaxy morphology, etc. The WFPC2 UV Atlas will provide a unique reference data set which will be valuable for several observations with the STIS, NICMOS and the Advanced Camera. Questions Observing_Description: The observations consists of WFPC2 images with the F300W passband and are rather straightforward. Each snapshot opportunity will be used to observe one galaxy only. We have referred to a typical total exposure time of 20 minutes, divided in three exposures to allow cosmic ray removal (see feasibility section). Careful microscheduling will optimize the efficiency of the program: galaxies with lower surface brightness will be observed with the longest available exposure times. In the following we have calculated the limiting surface brightness in the F300W at the 3Sigma level for typical snapshot observations. It must be kept in mind, however, that the morphology of galaxies at UV wavelengths becomes rather fragmented and bright, compact HII regions pop out from a diffuse light distribution. These systems, therefore, will be observed at a much higher signal-to-noise (SN) than the other parts of the galaxy. The limiting surface brightness is derived from the fluctuations per arcsec^2 produced by all the noise sources in a given observations. Sources of noise for WFPC2 imaging are: 1.) read-out noise (5.3 e^-/pix); 2.) dark current (0.003 e^-/pix/sec); 3.) F300W sky background (4.6* 10^-4 e^-/pix/sec); 4.) cosmic-ray removal and flat-field residuals (we have assumed an extra 5\\%). From these quantities, we can calculate the n-sigma noise fluctuations in mag/arcsec^2, given the F300W magnitude zero-point m0 = 22.78 mag_1e^-/sec: sb_n = m0 + 2.5* log_10(t_exp) - 2.5* log_10(10* n* N_s), where n is the desired Sigma level and N_s is the quadratic sum of all the noise contributions (rms pixel-to-pixel noise). For instance, for two ``typical'' exposures of 20 and 45 minutes each, 2* 10 minutes and 3* 15 minutes each respectively, the noise budget N_s is 8.2 e^- and 10.2 e^- respectively, corresponding to 25.7 mag/arcsec^2 and 26.3 mag/arcsec^2, respectively at the 1Sigma level. At the 3Sigma level, the limits for the same two cases are 24.5 mag/arcsec^2 and 25.1 mag/arcsec^2, respectively. These estimates use the galaxies mean surface brightness and are very conservative, because UV emission from galaxies is clumpy, arising mainly from hot star associations. From the expected photometric properties of the sample galaxies, the sensitivity that we reach in a 20 min exposure is more than adequate to observe all galaxy types with excellent photometric accuracy. For instance, using the m_Lambda 2000-B colors as a very conservative case, the expected surface brightness of elliptical galaxies in the F300W passband is <= 22.5 mg/arcsec^2, 2 mag above the 3Sigma threshold. For bulges we expect a surface brightness of 21.5 mag/arcsec^2, whereas for the disc we expect ~ 21.7 mag/arcsec^2. The effects of the red leak of the F300W on the observations are small. From the WFPC2 manual the contamination for a red star (e.g., spectral type K3) is about 4.5\\%. According to SYNPHOT, 12\\% of the counts through F300W for a red elliptical galaxy (e.g., NGC1399) come from photons with wavelengths longer than about 5000 Angstrom.
